18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 21, 1989 One of the oldest organiza- tions in Port Perry celebrated a special birthday this year. The Port Perry Yacht Club i8 50 year old in 1989, and last Saturday evening at a banquet, this milestone was remembered by Phil Orde who has lived in this community since 1926. i Mr. Orde is one of the founding members of the Yacht Club (there were eight others) and this past summer, the Club honoured him with the only Honourary Life Membership it has ever granted in its half cen- tury history. Now in his early 70's and by his own admission not an active boater or sailor any more, Mr. Orde has maintained an exten- sive history of the Club. And he's got more than a fair share of interesting and hu- mourous stories anecdotes about the Club and many of its members. These days, of course, home for the Port Perry Yacht Club is on the west shore of Lake Scu- gog about eight miles north of the community. There is a modern club- house and most of the members run about the lake in power boats. When the Club was formed back in April, 1939, it wasn't power that ruled the waves on Scugog, but sail. And the nine . founding members all had a .. passionate interest in sailing. ) The meeting, which found- , ed the Club was held in the An- "glican Church Hall, and in at- tendance to offer guidance were Major W.F. Windeyer and Com- modore Blake Van Winckle of the Lake Yacht Racing Assoc. "One thing they told. us," said Mr. Orde in a recent inter- view with the Port Perry Star "was to build a club-house and finace it on a pay as you go ba- sis." But it was another eight years before a club house was built in Palmer Park about where the beach and play- Found equipment are located ay. For the first few years, the members would just meet on the dock on Sundays for an af- ternoon of sailingorracing. - Sail in those days was re- ferred to as "stick and string," while power had the nickname "stink-po Ly By 1941, the Club had 30 members and seven sail boats, rnost of them home-made, many of the shallow draft variety called "skim dishes." Keels were out of the ques- tion for sailing on Scugog in those days and still are because of the shallow nature of the lake. But with World War 2 gath- ering steam at that time, Club activities were interrupted as virtually all the members were either overseason or working in war plants. : In fact, in 1944, all activi- ties were suspended. When the war ended and men came home, Club activities (Turn to page 17) a Volunteer labour raised the first club house for tha Port Perry Yacht Club in the members relaxing on the waterfront.
