32 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 7, 1989 - Reason to smile for the Insulators skipper For the Goreski Insulation Ban- tam No. 1's, Monday night was showtime as the team danced and pranced all over the Stouffville squad and hammered them 7-1. On Wednesday they were in Whitby, Thursday in Ajax as they had a couple of exhibition games to contend with. The team also went to Lindsay on Sunday but we'll talk about that game next week. Monday night, Port's home night, and they didn't disappoint the crowd on this night. Port's arsenal came out flying in this game and at the 13:34 mark of the 1st, it was the Logan line doing the damage. McBride found the twine as he beat the Clipper goalie upstairs. Assists to Logan and Vanderlight. That was all for scoring in the first for Port as they led 1-0 The second frame was just around the corner and Port scored 3 times and Stouffville once, their only goal. Bobby Orr was the man to beat on this one folks, oops, I mean Chris MacLeod, as he skated the length of ice and deeked the goalie out of his jock-strap to score. Nice work Bobby! The other 2 goals were by J. Cochrane and Parry. Were these a couple of beauties! Assists went to Vanderslagt, Moase, J. Cochrane and Laird as they all did their part on the goals. Beautiful! In the third period the 3 goals were scored by Parry, Laird, and Logan. The assists went to 6 players on the 3 markers and the playmakers are J. Cochrane (2), McBride, Vanderslagt, Traynor, and Laird. Gorgeous fellas! Port managed to slim their penalty minutes in this one as they only took 16 minutes. AToms win 5-2 . Port started the scoring off at the 9:14 mark on the clock. Jeff Clarke found the net with an assist by Timmy Fitzpatrick. While Port was sewing a penalty, Cobourg tied it up with 55 seconds left in the 1st period. The second period was good end-to-end hockey, interrupted by a power blackout with only minutes left. At the 11:30 mark in the 3rd period Kevin Gray got on a roll with an assist going to Timmy Fitzpatrick and Tommy Chambers. A minute later Kevin caught the top corner, assisted by Tommy. With 31 left in the 3rd period Kevin Gray got his hat trick unassisted. Tommy Chambers coaxed a Mice one in, assisted by Darryl Moase and Mike Heasman with 228 left. Cobourg finished up with 1 more goal but that was all. Both our goalies, Darryl Holtby, and Jamie Reid made many excellent saves, keeping their team strong with a 5-2 win. Thanks for the assistance, to Robbie Murphy, Kent Johnson and Timmy Fitzpatrick for their excellent fill-in defensive work and to the rest of the team who put out such a fine effort. Our very best wishes go out to our sponsor Mr. Malcolm on a speedy recovery. See you all next Friday at 8:00 p.m.. RONALD D. BRIDGEWATER, sa. Lis. Larock played in net and was phenomenal. May we also add that J. Cochrane has injured his left elbow. He had 12 stitches after crashing down on his elbow after scoring a most beautiful goal. Get well soon Cochrane! Port's next stop was Wednes- day as they got their amo ready to play the Major "AA" Whitbiers of Whitby. Port won the battle 3-1. The bright spot in this one was the defensive play as the backchecking and defensemen were phenomenal. There was a trememdous amount of gyration along the boards an in mid-ice throughout the game for both teams, but Bricknell, Vanderslagt, G. Cochrane and Traynor shook the arena with viscious body blows. I tell ya folks, they were rockin' the place. Hutchy got the call to play in the cage and was fan-tastic! As they say in the N.B.A. Port was first to score on this night as Parry and Laird carried over the blue line. Laird lost con- trol, but gained it again and threw it behind him to Parry. Bingo! One - nothing Insulators. Whitby scored in the first to make it 1-1. What a game! Whitby loved the penalty box in this game and Port capatalized. In the third, Port was on a power- play when Laird fed the puck to Bricknell, who ripped it home. Also assisting on the goal was McFish. Port was not finished. At the 14:26 mark of the third, it was Mr. Parry who stung the goalie one again. Vanderslagt and Pashley assisted. The highlight of this game was when G. Cochrane had a wide open net but missed. He never even knew the goalie was out. We thought he was shooting at the goalie, skating to the bench. Thursday night they were in downtown Ajax, Ontario to take on the Axeman. In Ajax, the In- sulators must have been tired, as they came out slower than molasses in January. I'll tell ya folks, John Kordic could have out- skated the supreme red and white machines on this evening. Even though Port's offence clicked faster than you can say Kordic, the team still won the battle at the 3. At the 6:43 mark of the first frame, Vanderlight proved he can play in this league as he ripped home a rebound. Bricknell shot in on net after getting it from Logan (Logo). This was all the scoring in the game, as Port won a barn burner at the Forum 1-0. There were a lot of stick checks in this game as it was quite chipy. Shawn (Bunny) Larocque got the call, and got his patented shut-out. That-a boy Bunny! With the recent success of the Insulators, Coach Wilbur has decided to put any major trade talks on hold for the time being. We'll tell ya folks, Wilbur was close to a major deal with the farm team, (Sportsland) as the players he had weren't perform- ing to par and had to prove themselves. We believe they have done so. Backhands: The total atten- dance thus far has been tremen- dous, with a new township record for minor hockey of, drumroll, 195 fans in 4 home games. The average was calculated to be about 44.8 fans and a record breaking 78 fans as they played their rival Uxbridge just last week. We can only say thank you fans for your support. So come out and set some new records. The game on Sunday will be tucked in next weeks paper. Eagles talk The Hallowe'en Carnival at S.A. Cawker P.S. was a tremendous success. Students, parents and school staff all pitched in, to make it a lot of fun, and raised over $800.00 which will be used to sup- port a foster child and to con- tribute to UNICEF. The following impressions help to convey the spirit of the carnival: UNICEF Yesterday was a very en- joyable day. We made a Haunted Hotel and lots of people came. There were other things too - like mazes, a restaurant, and there was one called the Gruesome: Ghoul Medical School. You had to goin and touch parts of the body. There were eyeballs, livers, neck and the brain. It was disgusting. My favourite place was the maze. It was neat! You crawled in and you get lost very easily, I got lost the second time. There were more activities too, like face painting, a wax museum, a bake sale, a bat dance, Vampire's revenge, a hoola-hoop hop and lots more. Today we counted up all our money and there was a total of $872.00. We will sponsor a foster child and donate the rest to UNICEF. Liz Jones Grade 5 Portable 2 Ms. Cleveland's Gr. 5 4. Cawker Public School had a UNICEF Carnival. It all started at 1:00 when Mrs. Daleman, our school's Vice-Principal announc- ed that the carnival had begun. There were plenty of fun ac- tivities for everyone. Some of the activities cost a measly 5 cents. I personally loved the Bake Sale! Everything looked so good. Good thing I had some extra pocket change! Well to tell you the truth, the whole school made a lot of good old Canadian cash! When I was working at my activity, I was sweating all over. My heart was beating really fast. When we started our Cawker Haunted Hotel, it went very fast. I am so sorry you all couldn't come. Well if you arc wondering what the school looks like inside, it's beautiful. You must be very pro- ud that your child is going to this school. Even if he or she isn't, you are paying taxes for wonderful teachers. If you didn't know, we might be having another UNICEF Carnival next year, so we all hope to see you there!
