The Adult Basic Literacy Program wants to do some- thing about that. The causes of Literacy are many, some may have learning barriers, others were kept out - of school due to illness, family conflicts, or poverty. Whatever the case Adult Basic Education of Durham Region can help. The learner can learn at his\her own pace, without any pressure. Many who cannot read and write are denied access to ser- vices and information. After this program learners can en- ter the workforce, or continue their education. The learner will now have gained confi- dence and self-respect to help them down whichever path he takes from there. This program is a branch of the Adult Learning Centre, and is aimed to give people a second chance." "It is informal one-on-one session with volunteer tutors," said Audrey Courtney, co- ordinator of the Literacy Pro- gram for the Port Perry area. Learners can achieve skills from this program such as spelling, life skills, getting a li- cense, reading cookbooks and filling out forms that are often intimidating, said Courtney. Those who are on shift-work or cannot make it for any other reason, there is a Outreach Program available where learners can meet at a variety of arranged places with a tutor. The tutor and learner are of- ten paired by similar interests when possible. Tutors are strictly volunteer,. A tutor is anyone genuinely interested in helping anyone. The desire to help is the only qualification. It is advised that each volun- teer go through a 12 hour work- shop. Some volunteers such as retired teachers,and teacher assistants may not be required to attend these workshops. If there is enough call for it, these workshops may be made available in this area. This program hasbeen active in Port Perry for four - five years, and the Outreach Pro- gram about two years. "The need has always been there, but people were not com- ing forward due to embarrass- ment, and other such reasons," said Courtney. According to Courtney, peo- ple are being forced into read- ing, whether it be a manual from work, or filling out a form. These people have always tried to find a way around it, to work around rules. Learners will begin to read the local newspapers to keep up on current events. "Converstaion can be easier for them if they can refer to articles," said Courtney. This program is very confi- dential, the learner, and tutors names will never be used un- less they want it to be. There are confidentiality forms that can be filled out. Courtney wants people to know that this service is availa- ble in the Port Perry area, and learning times can be very flexi- ble to meet the needs of a learn- er. Speakers needed The Canadian Mental Health Association/Durham Branch is in need of volunteers for our Speakers Bureau.
