This is Humphrey's first year at Port Perry High School, and hopes to see lots of involvement from high school students. Humphrey stated "the pur- pose of this trip is to get coach- ing experience with the elite coaching staff of the country. I want to learn better skills, to help lay the groundwork for ski- ing in Canada," said Hum- phrey. As a skier who likes long dis- tances, Humphrey himself has been involved in many 55 kilo- metre races , in such races as the Kawartha Tour. This will be his first year as a Masters, after competing as a Senior for many years. The high school races are 10 kilometres, and are hosted at such places as Orangeville, and Orillia. Port Perry High School is hosting two invitational tour- naments at Hardwood Hills in Orillia this year. The snow in this area is too unpredictable to have meets as they have in the past at places such as Dagmar. These races have 500-600 stu- dentsin them. From his experience with the Canadian National Team, Humphrey wants to improve his coaching skills, and learn the newest in technical aspects of ski racing, preparation of A.W. =] {e a] ¢ DEPARTMENT STORE (c IFT-T-ToRR = 1 oT-T-1 ANN Slo] ol Al = 1-1 ot dV) SPECIALS OF THE WEEK 20% Off Reg. "I am not looking for results, I want to get kids involved. I want to help the kids achieve the goals they have set aside for themselves, and help others set goals to strive for," he said. He stresses the fact that this opportunity came along at the right time, and he is helping to coach the best group. There is the A team whois the individu- als who will represent our coun- try in the Olympics this year, and the B team which are the following Olympic hopefuls. There is also the Junior A and B teams. Humphrey is helping with the elite of the group. The job for Humphrey came along at the perfect time, he has received encouragement and support from his employeer, and thanks a very supportive wife. He feels with this timing he will be back when the ski season is about to be underway here at the high school, and he will be ready to go. "I hope to pick up coaching tips from this elite coaching staff, and pass these tips on to other coaches and to the kids," he said. On November 6, Humphrey leaves for Vernon, and not only hopes to share what he knows with the National Team, but to bring home new strategies for his own coaching methods to share with his students.
