- Immaculate Conception School grows by two more portable classrooms by Jennifer Tufts Boy we have been busy these last two weeks and since the last article much has gone on. We cer- tainly are a growing school. When we started the school year we had two portables but in the last week and a half we have had two more portables arrive. The electricians were working very hard on Thurs- day to hook the heat and electrici- ty up. One of the portables will become the grade 2/3 classroom and the other one will be used as a storage room until next September, when it will become a classroom as our enrollment increases. Wow, Mrs. Fraser sure has her hands full with a bunch of little ones this year. We will have two and a half junior kindergarten classes and two and a half senior kindergarten classes with about twenty children in each class, as soon as the portable is ready. The new kindergarten class will be in the classroom across the hallway from Mrs. Fraser's room and the teacher will be Mrs. Arthurs, who is new to the school this term. Last Tuesday we had a school mass with Thanksgiving as our theme. The readings were chosen by the grade 8 students, who us- ed the Biblical Concordance to choose suitable passages from both the Old and New testament. On Wednesday Mrs. Sax's grade two class had a friendship party. As part of their religion program it was to help them welcome and make new friends from other classes. On Thursday we had people from the exchange program bet- ween Ecuador and Canada come to our school. They did a presen- tation on World food and hunger and answered our questions about their country. Soccer is our main sport this month. On Wednesday, October 11 the junior boys played in a tour- nament. The day after that the junior girls played in a tourna- ment of their own and placed fourth overall. Both tournaments were held at Lakeview Park in Oshawa. The weather was pretty good and even though it rained off and on they had a bit of sun. This Tuesday the senior boys tourna- ment was cancelled, however, because of inclement weather. Wednesday the senior girls had their tournament though. They played well, and had a lot of fun even though the weather was very chilly. Since the first week of school the grade seven and eights have been involved in an Industrial Arts and Family Studies pro- gram. Just this week it finished. Some of the activities the grade sevens got to do were to make drawstring bags and to do a lot of cooking in Family Studies, and in Industrial Arts they made signs. The grade eights made wall hang- ings-and enjoyed food from other countries in Family Studies. In In- dustrial Arts they had many choices of things to make out of wood. A few of them were piggy banks, clocks and shelves that were so impressive that they will make some little brother or sister happy on Christmas. A new teacher at our.school this year is Mrs. McColl. She is teaching grades one and two. Some of their work and activities include, a unit on friendship in Religion and now they are star- ting to work on things that have to do with Halloween. They also had fun on their trip to the apple orchard which concluded their Country Style Donuts Techstar Bridgeport Signs Pete's Pet Pantry lams Pet Foods Jack Cottrell Bryan Davies George Smith RidgeNorth Realty Port Perry Printing Port Perry Star Labatt's Gate Restaurant Port Perry Auto Glass House of Howard Gerry's Produce In Fashion Dennis Anderson R.J.M.
