New strategies in beef industry The Ontario Cattlemen's Association has taken the first step in developing a strategy for the Ontario beef industry. A com- mittee has prepared a discussion paper entitled "Blueprint for the Ontario Beef Industry." Part of the document examines the strengths and weaknesses of the Ontario beef industry while the remainder contains twenty one blueprints or action plans for On- tario producers to become more competitive in a market-oriented industry. The discussion paper examines the shift in cattle feeding activity from Ontario to Alberta and Saskatchewan, and looks at the influence of domestic and interna- tional grains policies on Ontario's land based cattle feeding industry in causing this shift. The paper states that four issues must be ad- dressed in planning for the future - 1) lowering production costs; 2) increasing the supply of replace- ment cattle in Eastern Canada; 3) ensuring product quality and consistency and new product development and 4) enhancing positive consumer attitudes about beef production as an integral part of sustainable agriculture. The twenty-one blueprints are concise plans, designed to ad- dress a broad range of issues from production costs to beef grading and quality assurance to producer leadership. Jim Magee, OCA President, said "I want to commend the members of the Blueprint Com- mittee for their realistic and ob- jective assessment of the industry and for focusing on what it will take for us to be competitive. I want to emphasize that this is a discussion paper and that we will be looking for reaction and feed- back from producers, packers, merchandizers and others who service our industry. We are plan- ning a series of regional producer meetings in late November and will be looking for our county and district Associations to co- ordinate the response from members in the area they service. The OCA Blueprint Committee consisted of Dr. Gordon Bowman, Animal Science Department, University of Guelph; Bryan Boyle, OMAF Agricultural Representative in Lambton; David Whittington, OCA 1st Vice President; Ardiel Grieve, OCA director; Bob Kerr, OCA direc- tor; Rodney MacLaren, OCA director and Graeme Hedley, OCA Manager.
