Skating program a big success Things are really humming at S.A. Cawker with a number of ac- tivities and events taking place. The Friday skating program is a big success as most of our students combining Physical Education with fun. The assistance of a large number of moms and dads is a great asset and is appreciated by staff and students. Lunch room supervisors are working hard as are parent volunteers and the contribution of these dedicated people make a big difference to our school. We are still looking for one more lunch room supervisor. On Thursday October 12 our S.A. Cawker Cross Country Team did quite well. The 9 year old boys, the 9 year old girls, the 10 year old girls and the 13 year old boys all placed third in their team events. Congratulations to the following individuals: Yvonne Prentice 2nd - 9 yr. old girls; Sean Ellis 2nd - 13 year old boys; Scott Jeffery 4th - 9 year old boys. Another recent event was the Grade 5 trip to Harbour front. Im- pressions of this excursion are shared by two students from Miss McLeish's class. Yesterday my class went to the Children's Environmental Festival. We learned alot of stuff about pollution, our environment and energy. We saw alot of things. 'All of the centres we went to gave us something to take home. The play we saw was very good. I didn't have a favourite centre. They were all good. There was one centre that we had to look at some things and see if we should bring them into the country or not. The centre with the robot was funny. He was tell- ing us about our environment. We played lots of games. It was a fun day. By Amy Rankin, Grade 5 - Miss McLeish On Friday we visited Toronto Harbour Front to discuss issues on our environment. The pollution in our air is caused from fac- tories, cars & gases. There is not much wildlife because of our freeways, roads, buildings & homes. We learned recycling & having a compost can really help the control of garbage. We ate our lunch in a tent, played games, saw maps, a remote control robot and a 24 inch large mouth bass. We learned about different kinds of dragonflies but most of all that we the people can make a dif- ference in our environment. By David Whitfield, Grade 5 - Miss McLeish Excitement is beginning to mount as the whole school gets in the spirit of our Hallowe'en Car- nival initiated by Vice-Principal Ms. Daleman. On the afternoon of Oct. 31st students from Grade 4 to 7 will operate a number of mysterious and spooky events throughout the school while Kindergarten to Grade 3 students will provide goodies for sale.
