Durham Region commission- er of works, Bill Twelvetrees told the Port Perry Star that the MOE turned the region down on all projects Durham sought funding. "The province doesn't have as much money as they have had in the past," Mr. Twelvetrees explained. "They have really re- duced expenditures in this area." Mr. Twelvetrees told the Star that closing the landfill site this year was not a necessity. "It is not critical that it be done this year or next year. We'll be budgeting for the clo- sure again next year (and ap- proaching the MOE again.)" Additional funding from the MOE for a transfer station at the landfill site was also re- fused. Durham set aside $136,300 in the 1989 budget for the project. Because a transfer station is needed immediately, Durham Region will go ahead with the project. Art Leitch, director of opera- tions, said the total cost of the transfer station will be $327,800. The extra money needed to complete the project will come from the region's waste disposal reserve fund, he said. Waste held at the transfer station will be hauled to the Brock West Landfill Site in Pickering. A small portion of the Scugog site will remain open to dump UP 0/ excess waste from the transfer station.
