38 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 3, 1989 - Danny Kaye tribute will open Town Hall 1873's new season "I'm shaking like a leaf....honestly!"' said the incom- parable comic Danny Kaye as he first faced his audience of thousands in London's famed Palladium Theatre in 1948. He went on to give the performance of a lifetime. And from that phrase has been born a modern day tribute to Kaye--the man, his music, and his drama--a show called "Shaking Like a Leaf: a Tribute to Danny Kaye." These ninety minutes of theatre and music will open Town Hall 1873's 1989-90 Concert Series on Satur- day, October 14th. For many years Oshawa native Kirk McMahon had been con- stantly told "you look so much like Danny Kaye." Finally taking those comments to heart, McMahon, a graduate of Brock University with a wide variety of theatrical experience, including the Shaw Festival, contacted Sylvia Fine, Kaye's widow (who had also composed a number of Kaye's unique doubletalk songs) and secured performance rights. With well-known Toronto com- poser/performer (A Night at the Grand, Cats) David Walden, on board as director and composer of additional music, the show was a go. Kirk, too, realized his dream when, like Kaye, he got to per- form at London's Palladium; in 1988 he was a success with his clever interpretation of the in- imitable Kaye. The entire show bubbles right along with such famed numbers as "Anatole of Paris," "Ballin the Jack," Five Pennies," 'Hans Christian Andersen," and many other fans of the irrepressible Kaye are sure to remember. David Walden's original song "Shaking Like a Leaf' opens the program and, accompanied by John Hughes on piano (as the sometimes reluctant Sammy Prager), McMahon weaves his own magic -- Kaye incarnate. He is amazing. Although the show is predominantly musical, the com- ic songs are carefully set in a framework of dramatic elements which help to reveal Kaye the man, who was also well known for his international work in Save the Children organizations.
