12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 3, 1989 Random Jottings by }.P. Hvidsten (from page 6) little stretch of sidewalk is, but including labour, material and equipment, I'll bet it couldn't be done for less that $500.00. I's unfortunate that the job of replacing the sidewalk to make it safe for pedestrian traffic, has been all in vain. The deep footprints in the cement will make it every bit as danger- gus to elderly people walking along that stretch as it was be- fore. MIRACLE? Ever heard of the miracle oil WD-40? The one that claims to stop squeaks...frees sticky mechanisms....penatrates quickly and frees rusted parts. Well over the years, on a couple of occasions I've even heard some people have had success with spraying it on their arthritis to relieve pain. Recently, my mother was told of this "miracle" oil, and de- cided to ge it a try. When | saw her a couple of days later, she raved that it had given her relief within a few hours after ap- plying it to her hands and arms. Having never suffered with arthritis, and knowing the pain my mother goes through at times, | was pleased that she felt it had given her some relief. | still don't believe it's possible! IN CLOSING Had a visit from Dr. Ralph Price last week, who informed me that me that there have been twins delivered at Community Memorial Hospital, and if there were no complications, could be delivered in the future. This came after | mentioned last week that our twins were born in Oshawa because it was the policy in Port Perry not to deliver twins. | apologize for the apparent error, but was under the im- pression, due to the increased possibility of complications, it Was the policy not to deliver twins in Port Perry. | stand correct- ed! Lesley Allin writes a letter to the editor this week blasting me for taking a shot at the doctors of this community. Once again | repeat...."| WAS NOT BEING CRITICAL OF THE DOCTORS." They are all highly skilled and respected in- dividuals who work hard at their professions. Their dedication to their patients was not and has never been in question. Mrs. Allin suggests she would like to hear my solutions to avoid the longs waits. | don't have the solutions, because there probably are no "magical solutions" to the problem. But possibly if patients were informed, when they arrive for their appointment, that it was going to be a long wait before the doctor would be able to see they, they could make an educated decision whether they want to wait or re-book their appointment for another day. It was never my intention when | wrote the original column to offend anyone, the doctors, their patients, or the doctor's families. It was purely an observation, one that had been on my mind for some time. This column for me, like the letters to the editor for our readers, is the space in which we can all freely express our our opinions about any subject matter. We don't always agree with our readers opinions, as they don't always agree with ours, but we print them just the same. Isn't it nice to know we have freedom of speech? Doctor waiting article nauseating To the Editor: Peter Hvidstens retaliatory ar- ticle or "waiting in a doctor's of- fice" is almost as nauseating as the article written by Julia Ashton on her '"'visit to the dentist." What sort of mentality do these reporters think that they are deal- ing with in the area of the Society shouldn't condone teen sex (From page 10) ed being 'non-judgmental' on all these issues. Why are they still pussy-footing around on early sexual intercourse? Simply tell- ing kids "don't do it' won't work either. Successful programs for post-poning sexual involvement need a philosophy behind it. 1. Why to say NO - negative con- sequences both physical and emotional. 2. How to say NO - refusal skills. 3. Positive values of chastity and the general building up of the students self-esteem." In short, the kids should be taught, very plainly the best medical way to prevent themselves from becoming a statistic in the AIDS epidemic is to practise ABSTINENCE till marriage. Abstinence never kill- ed anyone but sexual promiscui- ty has. Carol Switzer R.R.3 Port Perry, Ont. distribution of this newspaper We the readers consider ourselves intelligent people faithfully purchasing this paper week after week in the hope of reading the local news and not the personal problems of reporters. Who cares about Peters rash and operations or Julia's teeth? I am sure that most readers, like myself, were suitably im- pressed with the friendship bet- ween Peter and Dr. Bill. The ar- ticle actually sounded like a name dropping contest. Back to the doctors office (after a short delay) -- and waiting. In their lifetime many of the readers will be the cause of delaying a doctor. I'm sure most people left waiting will understand and try to he patient. [ don't anticipate that Peter or any member of his fami- ly will ever be guilty of the above or else he would never even have considered writing the article in the first place. To suggest that there are solu- tions to prevent interruptions and emergencies is 80 unrealistic and way out. It is ludicrous to even contemplate that Port Perry's on- ly surgeon can avoid delays. I'm sure Peter's reading audience like myself would like to hear his solution! On the other hand perhaps Peter should continue to bore readers with personal trivia, at least he is an expert on that subject.
