Ringette season underway There is a special group of girls in Port Perry between the ages of 8 and 18 who look forward to September with great anticipa- tion each year. Just before school begins, they are busy getting their skates sharpened, trying on their equipment, and watching for the day that the ice goes in at the Arena. These girls are Ringette players. "Ringette is a game similar in " many ways to hockey; its main difference is that a ring is used in- stead of a puck. Each team has approximately 14 players with 6 being on the ice each shift, and the - skills of passing, defending, block- ing, and scoring are taught and perfected throughout the year. The girls are provided with uniforms, and travel to other nearby centres to compete. It is highly organized at the Provincial and National level, and is certain- hd ly not just a local gathering of kids. Port Perry has teams at the following levels: Bunnies: born in 1982 - 1983, Novices: born in 1980 - 1981, Petites: born in 1978 - 1979, Tweens: born in 1976 - 1977, and Juniors: born in 1974 - 1975. We welcome more girls who are interested in trying out this ex- citing winter sport. Girls who have always wondered what the game is all about, and girls who have never even considered that this sport might excite them will be welcomed to come and give it a try. At these special "Try It" sessions, the girls should wear 'helmets, gloves, elbow and shin pads, and hockey skates if possi- ble. Equipment will be available for those who wish to try and do nét have the necessary articles. The girls are hoping for 4 or 5 more friends to join so that two teams can be formed. The coaches at this level are Lloyd Morden (985-3443) ; Dan Lally (985-4231) and Rick Webb (985-9844). Sunday, September 17 at 12:30 will be open to girls at the Novice Level (8 - 9 year olds). The coaches of this group are Walter Senyk (985-9022) and Diane Hooker (985-2276). : Both the Petites and the Juniors have their maximum number of players; however, there is lots of room in the Bunny program which meets each Monday at 5:00 p.m. to learn skating skills. While the Bunnies do not have formal competitive games throughout the year, their 'learning to skate program' is made lots of fun by the use of games, balls, sticks and rings. There is no pressure on these Bunnies to achieve any levels, so they learn to skate in a relaxed and fun-filled way. We especially encourage parents of 6 & 7 year old girls to consider this one-night-a-week winter activity. Any general questions regar- ding Ringette registration may be directed to Carol Traynor (985-8531). PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 12, 1989 -- 33 Tennis singles fournament in full flight The Port Perry Tennis Club's Singles Tournament is in full swing this week. This tournament is being very capably organized by our tournament chairman, John Scott. Many members have already played their first match. The semi-finals are to be played this Saturday with the finals battl- ed out on Sunday. Over forty people have signed up for this draw, the most the Club has seen in this tournament for a number of years. The Wednesday morning Ladies League held it's annual Singles Tournament last Wednes- day. Many of the ladies had lunch at The Murray House, unwinding after playing in the severe heat. After lunch some visited Scugog's own Magnetic Hill. I bet a lot of people don't know WE, the people of Scugog, have a Magnetic Hill, just ask Sandy, Gale or Linda - they'll all attest to it - and more! The finals were put off 'til Fri- day afternoon due to our ducky weather. In the Championship finals Kathy Reese defeated San- dy Greenwood. In the consolation side Heather McCrae won over Joyce Edwards. Congratulations Kathy and Heather. The heat was brutal on everyone but devoted tennis players play in all kinds of weather, crazy it may seem to others! : Many thanks to Kathy Reese who convened over this tourna- ment. Kathy is also our League organizer and has done a remarkable job over the summer. Mark October 28'th on your calendar now for our big social event of the year - our wind-up dance - the Tennis Ball - at Skyloft Ski and Country Club. More details will be available later. On the lighter side of tennis, "the grip is the description of the method by which you were holding onto the racquet that just flew across the court and struck a spectator." See you on the courts!
