They were up against the Royal Canadian Legion in a game that would determine the A Division Cham- pionship. This team has really come a long way this summer especially in terms of developing skills, positional play and team work. The Legion's goalie Joey Drib- bett did a very good job in net, allowing only one shot past him. Jason Cali-Whitworth scored after his hard kick from the left side. Chad Lance and Sean Williams played well at forward and the defense of Chris Midford, Lions roar Tyler Mark and Genevieve Cox- on just didn't let Legion forwards get a lot of shots off. Once again Ben Russell played a great game in goal - stopping 3 free kicks that drew loud applause from the fans - holy moly what a goalie! Stephen and Eric Wygerde played a good game for the Legion. Once again the refereeing was very good. Many thanks to all the referees who helped out at Cub Day but especially our fine squirt division refs who have helped all summer. Lisa Dodd, Lindsay Parry and Sara Coyne have done a great job, showing lots of pa- tience and energy. Broomball arrives You can sure tell when the sum- mer's gone. The Blue Jays are in a pennant race, NFL football started this last Sunday, the Mo- Jacks started camp, and the local Broomball season gets underway this upcoming Sunday down at the rink. : Again, there will be a six team loop as has been the norm for many a season now. The only dif- ference being that exactly half of them have changed names due to new sponsorships. Last year's league: champs Utica Farm Equipment will now be Jack Monsma Electric. Goreski's have changed to Woody's and B&L Donults will be known as The Framer's Gallery. Blackstock Merchants are still around as are' B&R Electric and Emmerson's Insurance. The season is starting a little earlier this year due to Christmas and New Year's eves falling on Sundays. It is strongly suspected that if the league had ventured to play on those nights there may have been the odd domestic dispute, so in the name of marital bliss, plus the arena is probably closed anyway, fellas, there won't be any play those evenings. For the first time in many a year the league's annual tourna- ment is coming home to Port, tak- ing place in early January of 1990. This Sunday's matchups will get play started at 4:00 p.m. with Woody's hosting Monsma, Em- merson's taking on B&R, and the last game pitting the Framer's against Blackstock. its grand opening. At corner five by John "Wally" Nesbitt The coming of September means the local racing season is drawing to a close but fortunately for motorsports addicts there are still a couple of events left to be run. . Next weekend Mosport's Ascot North will once again try for As you may recall, The Inaugural Event in July had to be cancelled when the clay track was found to be too soft and therefore too dangerous for racing. To remedy this situation it was decided by Mosport owner Harvey Hudes and Track Manager Dave Cook to pave the half mile circuit. The new sur- face will allow such events as the NASCAR Modifieds and The Super Modifieds to be run as well as The United States Auto Club (U.S.A.C.) Sprint Cars, the latter being invited to initiate the track on Sept. 16 & 17. In a 2 day, $50,000 shootout. If you have a ticket for the cancelled July weekend, it will be honoured at the gate for this event, so come out and see what Dave Cook calls "The Thing Of The Future For Sprint Cars." On Sept. 22, 23 and 24th, Mosport will host its final and un- doubtedly most exciting weekend of the year as the Trans-Am Series thunders into Canada's home of motor racing. And North America's longest running road racing series will have a definite Ron Fellows, the 29 year old resident of Mississauga, has inked a three race deal with the prestigious Roush Racing Team and will campaign a Ford Mustang with sponsorship from the Last year Fellows, in a similar car, set a new lap record on his way to pole position at Mosport and hopes a good result in this year's race will give him a full time Trans-Am ride for the 1990 season.
