In an effort to continue to improve the appearance, and readership of the Port Perry Star, readers and ad- vertisers will notice a change in format in the Real Es- tate and Classified sections of this paper. Starting with this issue, you will find the Real Es- tate section, complete with a new "Feature Home of the Week" from one of our local Real Estate companies. Each week, a different company will be given the oppor- tunity to "feature" a home of their choice in this space. Along with the feature home, the Real Estate sec- tion will feature articles which will be of interest to con- sumers in the real estate market. They will include in- formation on selling your home; explain what you can afford; discuss mortgage renewals and many other in- teres articles. We hope this new format will prove to be informative for our readers, and will also be a helpful tool for our valued advertisers. ' In addition to the Real Estate change, readers will notice a change in the Classified Pages of the Star. Clas- sifieds will now follow directly after the real estate list- ing, and be presented in a neater and easier style for readers. We hope you like the new look. Watch for more changes in the coming months. SE DONUT { a SE 2 Re BO : 5 NHN ad i If you fo COFFEE, this week our LARGEST COFFEE is just ... Coupon not necessary. This week only. Public meeting Sept. 12 Everyone is invited to attend a Public Meeting regarding the re- cent increase in municipal taxes imposed by the Scugog Town- ship Council and the Regional Municipality of Durham. Hosted by the newly formed committee of "Citizens Against Unjustified Taxes", the meeting will take place at the Port Perry High School on Tuesday, Sep- tember 12th, 1989 at 8 P.M. sharp. Guest moderator for the evening will be Joel Aldred. Representatives have been in- vited from Scugog Township Council, The Regional Munici- pality of Durham, The Durham Board of Education, R.C. Separ- ate School Board, and the Dur- ham Regional Assessment Of- fice. If you feel that your taxes were increased exorbitantly this is your chance to come and voice your opinions and ask questions of your elected representatives. If left unchecked 1990 taxes could be raised even higher. er 7 SR 2 09 7: One Doz. for Only.... $3.25 rt AL* PURCHASE A MINIMUM 25 LITRES OF FUEL FROM THE CANGO GAS BAR AND RECEIVE A COUPON WHICH ENTITLES YOU TO A QFFEE & DONT ™ Full Details at Gas Bar for just § Port Perry location Only 0 Do we really neea tne construc- tion and maintenance costs of TWO Region of Durham Head- quarters Buildings? Do we require a new sports complex, waterfront develop- ment and a new Scugog Munici- pal building all within a year which shows a minimum 14.8% tax increase? Although we have two schools systems in Durham Region, do we really need duplication in school bus routes, administra- tion costs and audio/visual sy- tems (to name a few)? What justification is there for school trustees, municipal and regional councillors to vote themselves such exorbitant pay increases? And why could these increases not have been limited to the rate of inflation? These are just a few of the questions which you may have regarding where your tax dollars are being spent. We all agree that taxes are es- sential but perhaps there is too much wasted and unnecessary spending. Our elected representatives will have to become more ac- countable as to where our tax dollars are being spent. If this unchecked spending con- tinues Scugog Township and Durham Regional will be far too expensive to live in. Already the manufacturing sector is bypass- ing this area because of extreme cost of living factors. Durham Region is among one of the most expensive areas in Southern Ontario in which to re- side. Think about it while you're paying your September 1989 in- stallment of municipal taxes this month. Wins scholarship The Durham Board of Edu- cation has announced that Rhonda Rice of Port Perry is a co-winner of the K.D. Munroe scholarship. Rhonda, who is now attend- ing Durham College, will share the award twith Janis Schmidt of Pickering. Each will receive about $500. The co-winners this year were selected for their persever- ance in academic studies and their participation in school ac- tivities.
