Uxbridge, Ontario 852-3355 Injuries take their toll on Pee Wees in OASA play Mother Jackson's Open Kit- chen's Pee Wee Softball Club came within one game of captur- ing the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Pee Wee * C" All On- tario Championship on Labur Day. week-end at Osgoode near Ottawa. The MoJacks had to settle for second place and "Ontario Finalist" as they were defeated by Palmerston in the final game. The local team opened the Double-knockout Tournament early Saturday morning as they defeated Fergus by a 5-2 score. Chad Venning picked up the win on a five hitter while striking out five batters. Todd Smart, Greg Rankin, Symon Traynor and Duane Empringham all had key hits in the first inning to gain the victory. In game two of the day the Pee Wee's played one of the favourite teams in the tournament from Stittsville and the game turned out to be a real thriller as Jeff Card for Port Perry and John Featherstone for Stittsville "lock- ed up" in a real "pitchers dual" in a game that went an extra inn- ing, before the MoJacks pushed across the winning run, in a 3-2 win. Jeff Card struck out seven batters while allowing just 5 basehits. Duane Empringham had two base hits and Grant Kay had a two run home run, while Scott Wylie doubled in the eighth inning ans scored the winning run. On Sunday morning the Mo- Jacks faced Palmerston the only other undefeated team, to see which club would advance into the Championship game later in the afternoon. The coaches, Wayne Venning, Jim Rankin, and Murray Empr- ingham, were also faced with a problem as Chad Venning, who until yesterday's game had not pitched in two weeks because of tendinitis in his shoulder, and Jeff Card who had pulled a groin mus- cle in the victory over Stittsville were not sure if they could play. The team went through the whole pitching staff including Cory Bricknell who usually plays second base as they were sound- ly defeated by Palmerston. The only bright spot for the MoJacks was the play of Steven Parish, Dave Bourgeois, Chad Kearns and Greg Rankin who came off the bench in the middle innings to spark a 6 run outburst but this fell short in the loss to Palmerston. This loss meant the MoJacks would again play Stittsville who had earlier defeated Fergus with the winner advancing to the Championship games. Chad Venning returned to the game and pitched a "masterful effort" as he only allowed 2 hits and struck out seven batters, John Featherstone again suffered the loss, in a 5-0 MoJack win. Cory Bricknell had 2 hits, and played brilliantly at second base, while Gavin Cochrane, Duane Empr- ingham and Kent Jamieson all had one hit. This win put Port Perry in the Championship round of the Tour- nament, against Palmerston, a team they must defeat twice to win the Tournament. After just a fifteen minute break between games, Chad Venning again returned to pitch four strong inn- ings with a great relief help from Jeff Card. The two "walking wounded" beat Palmerston by a 3-2 score in a great game. Gavin Cochrane had 3 hits in- cludig a long homerun out of the park, while Todd Smart, Kent Jamieson, Grant Kay and Duane Empringham all contributed key base hits. This game put the Champion- ship on the line for a one game "showdown," and with the Mo- Jacks playing their fourth straight game, and having both Card and Venning on the bench it was no contest as Palmerston defeated the MoJacks 15-0 to win the Ontario Championship. Only praise can go the way of the young Pee Wee players as they gave it there "best shot," but came up short. The boys played 4 games in an eight hour span of time, with on- ly short breaks between games. Other players were hampered with slight injuries but continued to play. Grant Kay with Greg Rankin nursing a sore arm had to catch all four games and did an excellent job. The infield of Todd Smart, Duane Empringham, Cory Bricknell and Gavin Cochrane played great all week-end. Steven Parrish and Kent Jamieson played well in the outfield and col- lected some important base hits. The MoJacks played well to be Ontario Finalist in Pee Wee ""C." The MoJacks play this week-end in the York-Durham League Championship Tournament, and hope to repeat as League Cham- pions, having won it last year. RONALD D. BRIDGEWATER, Ba. 115.
