Port Bantams win silver in 0ASA championship The Canadian Tire Bantams travelled to Mitchell for the OASA playdowns on August 25-27 weekend. From the opening ceremonies to the closing cham- pionship games, excitement was in the air. However, it was just not the year for Port Perry to end up the winner. The team played ex- tremely well, but were beaten by Garson in the finals and came home as the '"OASA Finalists." In Game 1, Port beat Wingham by a score of 8-6 with Richard Brough picking up the winina 7 hitter, allowing no walks and striking out 4 batters. In Game 2, Port met the tour- nament favourite, Fergus, and it turned out to be a pitcher's duel. The only scoring that took place -was a two run homer by Steve Laird in the first inning. The rest ©of the game had excellent defence, such as the shoe-string catch by John Ennis in right field. Brett Puckrin picked up the win with a 2 hitter, allowing only 1 walk, and 5 strike-outs. Brett also stopped a hard line drive in the 7th inning for the third out, and cancelled a sure run for the Fergus team. The Fergus pitcher got 7 strike-outs, no walks, and allowed only 4 hits with 2 earned runs. It was a very emotional game which drained both teams, and since Fergus had to play a game immediately following this one, they lost to Ottawa 6-0 and were unexpectedly eliminated from the tournament. Game 3 saw Port meet the hometown favourite, Mitchell, on Sunday morning, and the game was very close with Port Perry winning by a 7-2 score. With this win, they advanced to the finals without a loss. Brett got the win, allowing only 6 hits and 2 walks. Games 4 and 5 were for the Championship, and Port met Gar- son which had beaten Mitchell 3-2 to advance to the finals. The pit- ching by both teams was very strong, but Port lost 3-2, and 2-1. In the first game, Brett allow- ed only 3 runs, all coming in the first nning. Port scored 2 runs in the 6th inning when John Ennis got on with a single, and Jason Cochrane proceeded to hit a home run to narrow the gap. Unfor- tunately, no more runs would cross the plate. In the second game, Port struck for a run in the second inning when Scott MacLennan crossed the plate. Unfortunately, Darrell Vander Slagt was left stranded at "third base, which in the end would have been the tying run. Richard and Brett pitched very well, allowing only 2 runs to score in the 4th inning, which was enough for Garson to win not only the game, but also the OASA Championship. Hitters for the weekend were: Jason Cochrane with 2 singles, 1 double, 1 home run and 4 RBI's; Steve Laird with 2 singles, 1 home run, and 4 RBI's; John Ennis with Team Raglan Welding |" Lions Club Classic Photo Royal Canadian Legion Port Perry Star Van Camp Const. ta Team Bruton I.D.A.
