David Beesley Be honest with me! What is the first thing you look for when you pick up the newspaper? For many folks it is not the news headlines, editorials, business data, or weather forecasts which draws their attention....it is the latest sports scores. Their eyes quickly scan the page for details of the suc- cess or failure of their beloved teams. Sports have become an intense preoccupation of a large segment of our population. I acknowledge that physical ac- tivity is an important factor in a healthy lifestyle (we all recognize the inner connection of the physical and mental components of human life), but what I often see is a lack of care taken for the spiritual dimension of life. It seems. that people who attend to physical and mental needs but ignore important spiritual realities are not really healthy or whole persons. Quite often these people forget to excercise their spirits in the place of worship on the Lord's Day. Sundays have become increasingly dominated by spor- ting events. All over North America the trend is towards a new religion of recreation. Loyal followers fill the stadiums and arenas with a kind of evangelistic enthusiasm and un-, faltering devotion. I must confess that while I enjoy a good sporting event, I continue to find my supreme fulfillment in being in God's house with fellow fans of Jesus. As I see it, church is the place to be if you're on God's squad. But I'm constantly amazed at the flimsy excuses and ridiculous rationalizations some folks come up with to avoid being in church on any given sunny Sunday. It reminds me of a funny story I heard. A local clergyman listed 12 reasons he stopped attending athletic events: "Everytime I went, they asked me for money. The people with whom I had to sit didn't seem very friendly. The seats were too hard and not comfortable. The .coach never came to call on me. The referee made a deci- sion with which I could not agree. I was sitting with some hypocrites-they came only to see what others were wearing, Some games went into overtime, and I was late getting home. The band played some numbers that I had never heard before. The games are scheduled when I want to do other things. My parents took me to too many games when I was growing up. Since I read a book on sports, I feel that I know more than the coaches anyhow. I don't want to take my children because I want them to choose for themselves what sport they like best." We may chuckle, but perhaps we've been tempted to avoid church for some of the same reasons. Listen! Do something this Sunday and every Sunday that will be good for you. Get up, get out and go to church. You just may pick up some valuable tips for winning the most important game of all - the game of Life! Rev. "Thoughout September, we will be conducting an intensive fund- raising campaign. We want peo- ple to know that arthritis is Canada's number one chronic disease affecting one in seven people.
