Recently, the Middleton family of Scugog Rd. 5 attended a funeral in Pickering for Bill's grand- nephew, who had the misfortune to be thrown from his horse at the Calgary Rodeo and died from in- juries received. Sat. August 19, Joe & Clara Dowson were able to attend an Andrews-Carter wedding at Stitt- sville, near Ottawa & later attend the reception at the Amberwood Golf & Country Club. Then the next day all the wedding guests were invited to the wedding brunch at a restaurant at Bell's Corners where the bride works part-time. Clara and Joe arrived back in time to call in at Hazel Gibson's 80th birthday celebration. Sounds like a full weekend for our loyal posties. Last week was surely an ex- citing and busy week around the Community Hall and Island United Church when an average of 55 children attended the Vaca- tion Bible School. The help of several teenagers and parents was greatly appreciated. About 8 Island children enjoyed the Pioneer Camp for 2 days at the museum where they had 4 leaders. Miss Danielle Tower of Con. 9 recently enjoyed a trip to Australia to visit a pen pal with whom she had corresponded for about 6 years. Some interesting friendships and experiences develop through pen pals.. This brings to mind the experience of one girl who had a pen pal in Sierra Leone, a coun- try in W. Africa, about the size of New Brunswick. Correspondence "was not frequent but ore day a registered letter arrived in good English requesting a plane ticket to Canada to allow this student to study law in Canada and also home accommodation while here. What would you do in this case? I believe the children who at- tended Pioneer Camp were Red- mans, Gerrow, & Wright from Con. 13. Little Christopher Wright will be 5 years on Saturday and will have a birthday party. Hope you have lots of fun. Donnie Middleton of Con. 5 became a teenager last week. You are growing up fast Donnie. Myrtle & Carl Gimblett on Highway 7A are having an auc- tion sale on Wed. Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. as they are moving to an apt. in Port Perry. Myrtle's son John, will live in the house during winter or until it is sold. The "Head" U.C.W. will be held at the home of Mrs. Marilyn Tripp on Thursday evening Sept. 7. Friday, August 25 was a memorable day for the "Golden Slippers,' musical group with all members except one, along with many family members and in- terested people from Port Perry travelled to Roy Thompson Hall for their public appearance and share in the program to a full house of 3,000 people. The missing member was Bet- ty Reader, who with her husband, Nelson didn't return from their Alaskan tour until Sunday. Although many had attended Roy Thompson Hall before, it was a great thrill to get behind stage and learn how a program of this nature was controlled from many areas. There were 10 groups from across Ontario including choirs, skits and dances but ours was the only musical group and remain- ed on stage throughout the whole program. They enjoyed an extra pleasure when the audience par- ticipated in hand clapping and singing along with some numbers. Here there was an extra sur- prise when the Port Perryites plus waiters all sang "Happy Bir- thday" to Mrs. Eliza Fralick, a life long resident of Scugog Island. - The next exciting experience for the 'Golden Slippers' will be: this Wed. at the Exhibition, when they will appear at Centennial Square at 4 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. So if you are at the Toronto Ex. that day, give them your sup- port. They sure have come a long way and we are very proud of them. Excitement comes back to our own little area next weekend, when we are hoping for a Port Perry Fair without rain. I hear of Island children who are preparing entries. It was nice to hear from Marion and Morven Hughes again, as they have moved to Peterborough. Friends surprise Geers with retirement party by Vera Brown Church service this week will be held in Utica starting at 11:15 a.m. There will be a euchre in the hall this Friday starting at 8 p.m. Recent visitors at the Sobil home were Jane's sister-in-law, Mrs. Soraya Urech and baby Alexander from Detroit. The Sobils spent a few days at their cottage at Redstone Lake. Mrs. Bert Mitchell accom- panied by daughters Carla Utica and Area News by Vera Brown Meester and Louise Haugen and her daughter Shari, have been visiting with relatives in Holland. During their visit they attended a family reunion and 40th wedding anniversary celebrations for Leise's brother. Bruce & Marie Geer were in- vited back to the farm on Sunday afternoon where their family had arranged a surprise party for "New" at BROCK'S . BUSTER BROWN them to celebrate their retire- ment from farming. Relatives, friends and neighbours enjoyed a get-together and picnic supper. Congratulations to Ken and Barbara Takasaki who were mar- ried on Saturday afternoon in a lovely ceremony at their home south of the village.
