| | | 28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 15, 1989 The Greenbank Gamblers Fastball Club spent the weekend at the Minden Fastball Tourna- ment and they made it to the final game only to lose to Bracebridge Bears in the late innings. However the Gamblers played some excellent ball during the Tournament and their overall performance was the best they have played in the last few weeks. Their opening game was against the Toronto Royals (who wound up by winning the Consola- tion Championship) and Mark Goreski and Ken Goreski shared the pitching duties as the Gamblers downed the Toronto squad by a score of 8-2. Don Beaton and Paul Goreski each clouted home runs to lead the Gambler attack which featured a big 5 run first inning. The second game for Green- bank saw the team take on the defending O.A.S.A. Sr. ""B" Champions, the York Sundance squad with Wayne Wells on the Gambler mound opposing Yorks Russ Gregory. Wells has been in- jured for the entire season but he pitched a splendid no hit shutout as Greenbank eliminated the Sun- dance team by a 3-0 score. In the first inning John Jeffs drew a base on balls and with two out Don Beaton blasted a long home run to give Greenbank a two run lead, which was all that Wells would need in this game. They added their third run in the sixth inning on Terry Tills single, a sacrifice, a walk to Beaton and a steal of home. Sunday saw the Gamblers beating Toronto Metros in a tight 1-0 game. Mark Goreski threw a two hit shutout at the Toronto team and consecutive singles (after two were out) by Don Beaton, Rodd Real and Paul Goreski gave the Gamblers the "run that Mark Goreski made stand up for the victory. In the final game Greenbank met Bracebridge and their ex- cellent south paw Mike Crawford for the tournament champion- ship. The Gamblers Terry Till hit Crawfords second pitch of the game out of the park for a home run and a 1-0 Greenbank lead. Mark Goreski was back on the mound for the Gamblers and he shut down Bracebridge until the bottom of the fourth when with two men out and two runners on base, pitcher Mike Crawford caught hold of an outside fastball and lined itt out of the park for a three run homer. The 25 km. trail ride will be held on September 16, at Hoskin Stables in Blackstock. Trophies will be awarded to in- dividuals with the highest earn- ings, to the highest earning group or stable, and to the first and se- cond highest earning juniors. Trail snacks will be provided for riders and horses, and a delicious buffet lunch will be served. The purpose of the rideathon is to raise funds to help cover the cost of riding lessons, special equipment and insurance for the organization's disabled riders program. Over the tournament the Green- bank defense was excellent with outfielders Terry Till, Fred Cockerton and John Jeffs making some sparkling catches on line drives. The pitching was also top rate ak at Minden with Mark Goreski showing his early season form on Sunday, and with the apparent recovery of Wayne Wells shoulder injury. Ken Goreski continued his fine relief outings with two hitless innings against the Toronto Royals. The Gamblers Russ Korbak was playing in this tournament with a team of reunited Ex Oshawa Tonys players and not to be outdone, Russ pitched a not hit- no run game on Saturday morn- ing for the Tonys reunion team. However the Tonys lost their se- cond game on Saturday by a close 2-0 score with Dave Ruthowsky and Peter Landers handling the Oshawa pitching. The fastball season is quickly winding down with the Oshawa City League Tournament in Stouffville on August 25-26 and the Senior "'B" 0.A.S.A. Tournament in Stouffville on Sept. 2-3-4. All games are important now so take in as many as you can before the season draws to a close. Minor Softball resulis On Tuesday, August 8th, B& R - Electric defeated Seagrave 24-7 with a solid team effort. Everyone on B & R got on base at least twice and 6 of them managed to do it 4 times. Kevin Duncan had a home run and 3 doubles. Scott Harper had a home run, 2 doubles and 1 single. Jonathan Froats had a home run and 3 singles: Justin Kowalczyk had a double, 2 singles and a walk. Michael Bent had 3 singles and a walk. Shona Moase had a double, 1 single and 2 walks. It was also a team effort defen- sively as 7 different players were involved in the 15 putouts over 5 innings. Seven of the outs were strikeouts, 6 by Michael and 1 by Kevin. The other 8 outs were handled nicely by the rest of the team. Shona, Justin and Cara Vander Slagt had 5 outs between them at first base. Jonathan, while play- ing centrefield, threw out a run- ner trying to stretch a single into a double Jason Coish put the tag on the runner at second. 7-8 MITE BASEBALL Lucyk-McPhee 16 Emmerson's 15 Both these squads have been shorthanded as of late with everybody enjoying a holiday and last Monday night was no excep- tion as they began their first round of the playoffs with 7 players each. Lucyk-McPhee prevailed coming out on top with a 16-15 decision. All 14 players from both teams put on a good show with their defensive skills with so few out in the field plus there were numerous hits which wouldn't have been handled even with a full team. The following players deserve mentioning for their con- tributions: for Emmerson's - Jason Redman, Nick Pelyk, and Graham Strickert for their pro- wess at the plate. For Lucyk- McPhee - David Justynski, Lawrence Cook, and Lisa Lefort for their hitting. MITES SOFTBALL (9-10) Congratulations to the 9 and 10 year old Mites Softball Team sponsored by Anderson Chev- Olds, and coached by Al Wakeford. This talented group of ball players are the league win- ners, having won 9 of their 10 game. Greenbank Perfect Heating, coached by Judy McSween was the second place team, with the third place being won by B & R Electric coached by Nelson Coish. Tournament play among these teams began last Tuesday even- ing, and will finish on Saturday August 19th at 3:30 with a play-off game between the two division winners. This game will take place at the Perry Glen Diamond, and we expect an exciting match and a full cheering section. The following teams have won heir first game in this tourna- ment round: Greenbank Perfect Heating, B & R Electric, Ander- son Chev-Olds, and Greenbank Four-Kee. A sincere thanks to the coaches of all the nine teams, and to the over 100 kids who played ball each Tuesday evening in the 9-10 Mites league. PLAYOFF On August 7 Valu-Mart and Home Hardware played their first play-off game of the season. As usual these two teams were very well matched. Valu-Mart's strong hitters Leanne Holt, Mat- thew Rankin, Chris Thompson, Jenny Donnelly and Grant Hooker all scored in the first inning. Home Hardware were down in runs until the top of the last inn- ing when Greg Manns, Susie Ed- wards, Christopher Jones, Mat- thew Caldwell and Jared Aldridge all slammed the ball to help pull ahead 7-6. Valu-Mart managed to sneak 3 more runs in the last inning to finish the game 9-7. Great efforts were made in the field by Home Hardware's David Storms, Jody Edwards, Patrick and Kristen McKernan and Matthew Mac- Master. Jody Edwards, Jon Sanders and Christopher Skerratt all played super the entire game. Valu-Mart's Jamie Britt, Jamie Page, Chris Elaschuk and Todd Mitchell each made some fan- tastic plays in the field. Good Luck in the next play-off games. MITES 9-10 The first game of the tourna- ment last Tuesday saw Perfect Heating defeat Brutons 20-6. Perfect Heating had Greg Phayre and Jeremy Gibson both hit 4 for 4 and both had a home run. Heather Tredway played a good defensive game. Playing their game well were Graeme Powell, Tanya Wilson and Mike Phoenix. Phoenix. Bruton's team had Diane Vanderlight make a great catch in the field. At the plate Adam Murphy got on base all evening hitting 4 for 4. Ian Parliament did a great job on the pitchers mound and Chris Ore covered all his posi- tions well.
