In the consolation final round Sam Vanderwyst defeated Cate Lewis, 8-1. "5 : The weather was hot and sun- ny along with "hot" tennis being played. A lot of credit is given to everyone involved in this tourna- ment. Jay Neill did a terrific job organizing and running this junior tournament. Many thanks to Lin- da Bright, Heather McCrae and Judy Vanderwyst for contributing the delicious food for all those hungry players. Fruit breads, 'grapes, veggies and dip, melon slices and Judy's famous "tennis" cookies adorned the table at the courts and nary a crumb was left! A party was held later at "Ken- dra's cottage" where many water skied, swam, went for boat rides and ate AGAIN. Horst Beitinger, a former member we hadn't seen for a long while entertained eveyone at the party. Horst is remembered by many for his ever-jovial personality on and off the courts and for his generosity when, two years ago, he donated a canoe to the Port Perry Tennis Club and a raffle draw was held to raise money for the club. Thanks to Horst for supplying the chicken and to all the juniors who brought the food to grace the din- ner table. It was certain that no one would go away hungry! One participant is the tourna- ment came a long way to play namely, Dieter Kaufmann of Leichtenstein, a little country near Switzerland and Austria. Dieter is a pén pal of Rob Johnston's and is staying with the Johnston family for a month. Many thanks to Sportsland for donating the trophies for the win- ners in the championship round. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 15, 1989 -- 27 Junior tennis finals held at the Courts Monday Night League is into its third week and the Pro Ratings will be edited next week. Don't forget the Singles Tournament in September. There's action in the Kawartha League this week, namely make-up games due to rain-outs. Play-off action begins next week. The women of the Wednesday mornig Ladies League are having a fun time enjoying exercise, camaraderie, gossip and a few in- juries such as bleeding noses and sprained ankles. Hopefully Sandy will make a fast recovery and be back on the courts again this week. Check out the dates for the League's Pool Party at Kathy Reese's home and the League's own Singles Tournament in early September. On the lighter side of tennis, Newcombe is a former tennis star who now makes a living by pro- moting a Canon instead of serving like one.
