1 16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 9, 1989 Hard work pays off for Chief Scout Jasen by Rob Streich Being a scout means many things to many people. To Ja- sen Dawson it meant shaking the hand of Princess Fergie in P.E.L last month. Jasen is one of the local boys who was fortunate to trav- el to the Canadian Jamboree this summer where Prince An- drew and Sarah Ferguson were the guests of honour. This fall another great thrill awaits Ja- sen as he will be receiving his Chief Scout award... A week ago Jasen spoke with Mayor Ha ties of elected representatives, thus completing the final re- about the du- uirement for this award. The hief Scout 'rating' is the high- est honour that can be earned by a scout, involving the com- P etion of hours of community service, skills training, leader- ship initiative, discussion with representatives from the po- lice, fire department and trades. Although it has taken Ja- sen a long time to get here, he related that it was a cumula- tive process, one level building on another, He said, "A lot of it was common sense, what you learned from the manual and actually being out at the camps. MELNIK -- Julie Lyn Wilson and Pierre Lucien Melnik were married on June 10th, 1989 in the Port Perry United Church. The bride's parents, Jimmie and Margaret Wilson are residents of Port Perry, and the groom's parents, Jan & Rita Melnik reside in Whitby. The bride wore a long white wedding gown with a sweetheart neckline and a lace bodice with white pearls. The bride also wore a short head band type veil with pearls and white satin lace shoes. The groom wore a light grey tuxedo with grey accessories. - WILSON The matron of honour was the bride's sister, Marie Wilson of Port Only a very small percent- age of scouts ever make it this far, because it is a long, trying road. Jasen is especially thankful for the extra assis- tance he gained from his Scout- er, Colin Williamson, "Without his help and coaxing, I could not have doneit," said Jasen. Next year will mark Ja- sen's eleventh year in scouting, including time with beavers and cubs. Jasen, who will be 16 in November, has been working toward his chiefscout award for nearly two years. or Jasen, scouting really becomes enjoyable through the camaraderie and interaction with leaders and fellow scouts. As you gain experience, greater responsibility is heaped upon you, and you have to work hard- er. The perks, as Jasen sees them, are the increased respect of the younger scouts as you show responsibility and compe- EMMERSON INSURANCE BROKERS LIMITED 183 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY, ONT. There'is a certain sense of pride in knowing that you are doing things the right way, whether it is campsite set up, tying knots or giving a lessonin civics. As Jasen has worked through his different levels of Chevrons, he has found that the required tasks have become more challenging, and the in- creased responsibilities within the troop have further compli- cated his life, ; But that has not slowed him down, as the 1st Whitb troop has continued doing well. They have won the competi- tion camp in Oshawa for the last two years, beating 100 oth- er troops. Although Jasen lives in Prince Albert, he has been working with the First Whitby Scout Troop, because there wasn't a local scout organiza- tion to work with until just re- cently. Next year will see Jasen going into Venturers, and be- cause of his positive experience at the last Canadian Jamboree, he hopes to be able to travel to Alberta for the 1990 CJ. Perry. Bridesmaids were Gail Gilloch of Scarborough and Anna Gouldburn of Prince Albert. The matron of honour and bridesmaids wore elegant blue <atin dresses and matching blue satin shoes. The best man was Wayne Nimigon of Oshawa and ushers were George Russell of Oshawa and Graham Reid of Whitby. The best man and ushers wore grey tuxedos with royal blue accessories. Pictures were taken at the bride's parents' home in Port Perry. The reception was held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Port Perry. The happy couple now resides in Oshawa.
