SATURDAY Officials with the Durham Board of Education are not the only people keeping a close watch on the progress of con- struction at the new S.A. Caw- ker Public School in Port Perry. Judy Crawford and Denise Gilbert are also waiting anx- iously for the opening of the new school on September 5. They are with Schoolhouse Playcare Centres, a non profit company that was given the contract to operate the day care in the new school. The Cawker School is one of four in Durham that will open this fall with day care on the premises. Judy Crawford is chairper- son of the Playcare Centres board of directors, and she told the Star in a recent interview that the day care at Cawker School will take 31 youngsters, 16 in the pre-school age group and 15 in the six to 12 year age range. And she said, the Day Care will be open 12 months of the year, including school holidays like Christmas and March Break. "Our number one priority is to the needs of the community ," she stated. The cost for full time day care is $66 per week which in- cludes a hot lunch for school- age children, and $100 per week for pre-school age. Part time rates are also available, and depending on spaces, there may be short no- tice day care services available. Ms. Crawford said the ten- tative hours of operation are from 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM, but these may be subject to change once the centre is operating. Denise Gilbert is the ad- ministrator for the centres oper- ated by Schoolhouse, and on a recent tour of the centre she was pleased with the design of the 2800 square foot centre. There are two large, bright rooms (for each of the age groups) and the Centre has its own washrooms, kitchen, and outdoor play area fenced from the rest of the school grounds.
