ATT Things getting back to normal Pioneer Day Camp at museum returning to Whitby on August by Mary Lynne Williamson Curator Things are finally settling back to normal after our highly suc- cessful Pioneer Days weekend. The long hours of planning and preparation by Pioneer Days Coordinator Carol Fagel and her hardworking committee certain- ly paid off! Many thanks to all those volunteers, demonstrators and visitors who helped to make this annual celebration of Canada's birthday one of our big- gest and best ever. Our staff is now getting ready for our next special program, the Pioneer Day Camp, which will run in two one-week sessions from August 7th to August 18th. The day camp will be held in the mor- nings and will introduce children to many aspects of Native Cana- dian, Pioneer and Victorian life. Each day the children will make (and sample!) an" authentic recipe, listen to stories, sing songs, play games of the early settlers, and learn such old-time crafts as candle-dipping, Vic- torian Wreath-making and Native bead-work. The day camp is open to all children aged 7-10 (special age exemptions may be granted on request) and the registration fee of $25 per child includes the cost of all materials and mid- morning refreshments. If you're looking for a unique, fun and rewarding summer experience for your child, give us a call to reserve a spot for your little' Pioneer in our daycamp, or pick up a registration form at the museum office. On Tuesday, August 22nd, the Scugog Shores Museum goes Hollywood as the Durham Board of Education arrives to film the first in a series of educational video tapes featuring our site. These videos will be distributed to schools throughout the Durham Region to assist students studying Pioneer Life and Community History. If you've always wanted to be in the movies, then here's your chance! Just dress up in pioneer costume and come on out to join in the fun. We need children for a schoolroom se- quence, adults for a church ser- vice to be held in our very own Head Church, and lots of people to flesh out the village scenes. "There are no lines to learn, and everyone is welcome! New at the museum is a fabulous collection of oil lamps owned by Joy and John Ballard of Port Perry. This temporary ex- hibit is already a favourite of our staff and visitors alike, and will be in place throughout the winter months, If you haven't already been in to see Earl Pascoe's clock collection at the museum, time is running out. The clocks will be PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 25, 1989 -- 47 20th to make room for our "Back to School' exhibit. Mr. Pascoe will be holding a clock clinic at the museum for people interested in identifying, repairing or restoring their own clocks. There will be no charge for this event, so dust off your treasured timepieces and bring them in! For further information on these or any of the museum's summer programs, give us a call at 985-3589, or drop by our offices in the old Head Schoolhouse, Scugog Island. FALSE PROMISES? When your thinking about advertising, don't be fooled by false promises and large circulations. Many newpapers are given away FREE, thrown at the bottom or.your driveway, or in the ditch. But how many of these are actually read? The Port Perry Star has a paid circulation of 7,000 copies per week. Our readers want the Star and the pay to make sure they have it in their homes. By advertising in the Star, your message will reach these potential customers. For Advertising Made Easy call the STAR at 985-7383 Graduate Barrett and Bruce Crawford are pleased to announce the graduation of their mother and wife, Judy, who received her Master of Arts Degree in Educa- tion at the Spring Convocation from the University of Central Michigan. Judy is employed by the Durham Board of Education as a Program Resource Teacher. The Crawfords reside on . Scugog Island.
