The Intrepid Cottager (From page 14) hot water and lighting the fire. He's still forgiving the fried heater element and the house full of smoke where I forgot to open the damper. He let me keep the house key, but promise never to go in without help. Once I had to paint our lake's emergency equipment boxes. Fire engine red. Using my wallpaper measuring skills, I over estimated by a gallon, so being neighbourly I proceeded to paint whatever needed painting. Two snow buggies, an outhouse and a picnic table later, a delegation showed me an abandoned barn down the road that could use a coat. In the city they would have § had me arrested for public mischief. But the true measure of neighbourliness is when one is £ prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice. The wife says that she qualifies since she is willing to let me go at the drop of a hat. In the city, no one would even know I'd gone. It was three weeks before the wife realized I'd already moved to the country. For me, that test came when I made the mistake of arriv- ing at a neighbour's when the roof was-being reshingled. Even then, I would have skulked off, except that all the other neighbours were already up there and could see me. At least ci- ty folk don't gather on roof tops. Not that I'm afraid of heights as everybody thinks, it's just that I'm allergic to high air. I'm used to mine at ground level | - smoggy, smelly and visible. But I gamely climbed that ricke- § ty old ladder to that steep and slippery roof and clung to the § chimney so it wouldn't fall over. Then I nailed anything within & reach to the roof including my shoe soles, pants seat and a neighbour's hand. . : But their gratitude made it worthwhile, especially the part § when they all were back on the ground laughing as I tried to find § a safe way down. I considered staying until another reshingling § was needed or until the nails through my clothes rusted out, but | was restrained by the sight of low flying geeseona bombing run. So I have learned that there are virtually no limits to coun- try neighborliness. I've also learned that there is no such thing as a normal neighbour. At least that's what all my neighbours keep telling me. We managed to round up several of the friendliest (friendly Is sexy Isn't it?) fund rais- ers In town - the 'sexy contest' winners. Pictured here are Sandra McCully the friendliest nurse ($157.08), Teresa Grieve the overall winner and sexiest lob ball player to boot ($859.03), Randy Dowson the sexiest salesman ($109.85), and the friendliest bank teller Jayne Parry ($504.85).
