16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 18, 1989 Bunny Rowland designs by Cathy Olliffe Maybe Bunny Rowland should have been a graphic art- ist. Instead, she is a devoted mother of two, and an equally devoted member of the Girl Guides of Canada. She is the first Port Perry resident to ever be represented on the prestig- ious Provincial Council of the Girl Guides of Canada. She's their secretary, as well as an enthusiastic promoter of the entire Girl Guides move- ment. But does she know how to wield a pencil! Bunny's creative abilities have recently garnered her fame, if not fortune. Her de- signs for Girl Guide crests were selected by judges and will be made up into crests to be used by youngsters in the Central ig of the Girl Guides of Cana- a. Central Area spreads from Pickering to Lake Simcoe and all the way to Port Hope and Co- bourg. The crests will be used as "traders" and will no doubt ap- pear on sleeping bags and back- packs belonging to girls from all over the world. She read about the contest in the guiding magazine "Central News & Views", and decided to try her hand. Not that she was a novice when it comes to crest design- PAUL VAN CAMP Chartered Accountant 52 Water St. 9885-97885 Port Perry ing--she had already designed crests for Port Perry District, Ontario, and a bookmark (which is available all over Can- ada). So she figured, "I'd give it a shot. It's just doodling," she says modestly, "putting in time." She submitted one entry, but wasn't happy about it, so she tried another one and mailed it off in March, just before the con- test deadline. Her second entry was the hands down winner. It features a yellow six point- ed flower (representing the six Guide divisions in Central Area). The yellow represents sunshine and the sunny disposi- tions of members. She chose the green in the crest for vegetation and the love of the outdoors. Blue was in- cluded because of lakes, sky and the Guiding movement colours, and the white background rep- resents winter and the purity of members. There was no prize for Bun- ny's award-winning crest. No trip around the world, no mil- lion dollars, not even a free box of Girl Guide cookies. But she doesn't care. "I did it all for the love of Guiding," she says with a grin. Actually, Bunny almost al- ways has a grin on her face, probably because she is so hap- * INCOME TAX * FINANCIAL PLANNING * SMALL BUSINESS OSHAWA-WHITBY FAIR JULY 20 to 23, 1989 | LOCATION: Garrard Rd. She started with Guides the way most parents do--her two daughters, Margaret and Jan- et, were enrolled in Brownies, 80 Mom decided to helpout as a Tawny Owl. A year or so went by and Bun- ny found herself as a Brown Owl (the head honcho of the Brownie pack). She stayed with her Brownies until December 1988, finally re- tiring so she could devote her- self to the administration as- pect of Guiding she had involved herself with so com- pletely. Despite the fact that Marga- ret and Janet have long since grown out of Guides, Bunny is loving it more than ever. She has met many famous people (including the Lieuten- ant Governor of Ontario, Lin- coln Alexander) and she's made all kinds of new friends. And she's always busy either going to meetings or taking training sessions (by the looks of her photos, the training is more fun than work!). "When you start with 'Guides," she says, "you have no idea where you can go." And she is a testament to the fact that anyone can go far. Bunny Rowland Is completel As for her crests, she's happy with them of course, but she has no intention of becoming a full- time designer. First off, she doesn't have y devoted to the Girl Guide movement, and she's also a pretty fine artist. Recently her crest designs won a Guide contest. See story for detalls. enough time. But she doesn't really consider herself to be an "artist." "It's just a chance to promote Guiding," she says. And smiles. Again.
