Gamblers fall in standin The Greenbank Gamblers have been sitting on top of the Oshawa City and District "A" Division coop since the league opened back on May 15th. However on Wednesday night last week the Gamblers dropped a tight 2-1 game to Stouffville Betz Pools and the loss moved Stouff- ville one point ahead of the Gamblers into top spot. The loss was a tough one for the Greenbank team as they played extremely well both on offense and defense. In fact this was a game that the Gamblers probably deserved to win as they out hit the Betz Pool boys by eight hits to four. : Mark Goreski pitched strongly on the Greenbank mound and Stouffville only managed one fly ball to the Gambler outfield. At one point in the game Goreski fanned six batters in succession and ended the game with a total (9-10 yr. old) SOFTBALL MITES STANDINGS As of July 4 Team GP W L T Pts Anderson Chev-Olds 7 6 0 1 13 Greenbank Perfect Heating 7 5-2 0 10 B & R Electric 6 3 2 1 17 Greenbank Four-Kee 6 2 2 2 6 Irwin Smith 6 2 3 1 5 Brutons 1.D.A. 6 2 3 1 5 Nortons Home Improvements 6 2 4 0 4 D.J. The Gamblers scored their run in the top of the fifth inning as Terry Til singled into left field and was moved to second base on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Hugh Johnston. Don Phinney beat out an infield hit and moved Till to third base. So with runners on the corners John Jeffs lined what looked like a sure home run into deep left field, but Gary Grant made the defensive play of the game as he ran down Jeffs line drive for the second out. Terry Till scored easily after the catch but Daryl Moxely pitch- ed out of the inning. Greenbanks down fall came in the bottom of the sixth inning as Moxley dropped a bloop single down the left field line. Gary Grant sacrificed and was safe at first as the runner beat the force play throw to second. With two men on and nobody out Jones Up at the Scugog Soccer fields on Wednesday night June 28, it was unbelievably cold. Players who were taking their turns on the sidelines were shivering under blankets but there was lots of ac- tion on the fields. Classic Photo came up against the Port Perry Star team and the result was a 3-0 win. Scoring for Classic Photo were Darryl Dalton with 2 and Sara Smith 1. Ian Garnett, Jamie Byars and Eddie Whitfield played particularly well. On the north field Van Camp and Raglan Welding both had lots of action. Scoring for Van Camp was Aaron Chambers with 2; Raglan Welding filled the net with 6 goals with Russell Brown and Scott Cunningham responsible for putting them in. : The Lions Club played a game versus the Royal Canadian Legion. This ended in a 3 all tie which is indicative of the evenly matched play. Mikey Kvonschno- ble did a fine job in net and a lot of good plays were made by Chad Lance, Christopher Medford, Genevieve Coxon and Ben Russell. Soccer Tip for the Week - Ball out of Play: The ball is out of play when the whole of it crosses the touch line or the goal line either on the ground or in the air. On July 5 the Royal Canadian Legion team was matched with Classic Photo in a really exciting game. Both teams showed lots of hus- tle and there were quite a few close calls. Greg Landell scored all of the Legions goals to earn a hat trick (3) and scoring for Classis Photo were Jason Crosier, Justin Brigglestone and Darryl Dalton (with 2). The Lions club played against Raglan Welding in a very close eM, Y SUMMER J CLOTHING Nike, Converse, Adidas, Brooks Tanks, T-Shirts, Sweats & Shorts PINERIDGE SPORTS SHOP Street - Port Perry PHONE 985-2839 0 Lmmmmmmmmmmm------ sacrificed the runners to second and third and then Mark Joslin bounced a single through the "Drawn In" Gambler infield to score both runs, and give Stouff- ville the win and temporary possession of first place. Paul Goreski led the Greenbank attack with a pair of hits and Trevor Till, Rodd Real, Mark Goreski, Terry Till, John Foster and Don Phinney rounding out the Gambler hitting. Mark Joslin with two hits, Steve Schell and Darryl Moxley had the four hits for Betz Pools. Last weekend the Greenbank boys travelled to Buffalo for an International Tournament and were eliminated by losses to Utica (New York) and Erie (Pennsylvania). The Gamblers did not play up to their potential in this tourna- ment and were shut out by 5-0 to Utica and edged 3-2 by the Erie game. The Lions were once again short handed but everyone gave their best effort to hold the Raglan Welding team. Ben Russell played a super game - first in net and then on offense. Genevieve Coxon and Tyler Mark were really showing a lot of hus- tle. Scoring for the Lions Club was Jason Whitworth with 3 and for Raglan Welding Russell Brown with 3 and Greg Bruton with 1. Lyle Dufoe played well for Raglan Welding on defense and Matt McGavy did a good job in net. Van Camp and Port Perry Star were involved in a high scoring 7-2 game. Good goaltending by Mike Demaio, Phillip Krohn, Chad Penn. squad. The winners of the Buffalo Tournament however did come from Canada as York Sundance ended up as the winners. The Gamblers will be com- peting in the Ontario Senior "A" Tournament in Burlington on Aug. 4-5-6, and in the All Ontario Senior "B" Championships in. Stouffville on the long weekend at the start of September. Soccer results Holland and Sean Martin kept the score from being even higher.
