The parade is held to com- memorate the Battle of the Boyne on July 12 1690 in which the Protestant King William 111 defeated Catholic forces. And the parade was led by a person in a broad brimmed hat on a white horse, depicting King William. Many of the banners car- ried by marchers proclaimed a loyalty to the British Crown and the Protestant faith. A member of the Port Perry Lodge told the Star the religious signficance of the organization has diminished over the years. "We are like other service clubs, we raise money for com- munity projects." One of the oldest marchers in Saturday's parade was Jack Thompson of Port Perry. At 90 years of age, he walked the en- tire route in the hot sun. Next year, the Orange Pa- rade for this district will be held in Orono.
