Durham Child sexual abuse is an unfor- tunate factor in our everyday world. It's not something one enjoys discussing. Nor is it a new pro- blem. But it is a crime that more people are able to talk about today. As our society becomes increas- "ingly more open, there is a grow- ing public awareness of the full extent of this serious problem and a desire to provide all possible protection for our young people. Last January 1st the federal government brought into force stronger and clearer laws against child sexual abuse. Amendments to the Criminal Code protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation by simplifying earlier legislation and creating some new specific offences. As well, the Canada Evidence Act was changed to facilitate the presentation of court testimony by children in abuse cases. These crimes can be reduced by educating both children and adults. Therefore the Federal Department of Justice has just published two excellent free new booklets to help all Canadians. receive a gas allowance. Dialysis treatments take ap- proximately four hours (plus travelling time) which is a full day commitment. At the same time it gives the volunteer ample opportunity to take in anything the city has to offer while he/she is waiting. If four more people of- fer to help with this request the volunteers will not be expected to help every week. Community Care doesn't often have oppor- tunities for people to volunteer on a Saturday. ' If you are available to help even once a month it will certainly be a tremendous support to this family and others. It is a general guide to. help them respond when a child speaks of being molested, pro- viding information about the laws and the legal process.
