2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 6, 1989 Two Queen St. parking spots designated for handicapped Township council will des- ignate two parking spots on Queen Street for the handi- cappedonly. The decision to designate the two spots came Monday af- ternoon after councillors heard about some of the problems peo- Sandy has a 'Lotto' luck When it comes to picking numbers, Sandra Day seems to have a "midas touch." A year ago February, San- dra and her husband Doug picked all six numbers in a Lot- ta 6/49 draw and collected a cool $560,000 as their share of the first place prize. And just last week, Sandra again had some good luck with 6/49 as she picked five of the six numbers. She picked up $2200, not quite as much as the "big one," but nothing to sneeze at. Ironically, Sandra said that for a while she gave up playing the lottery game, and only recently started again. DOWNTOWN PORT PERRY B.LA. Book now before your summer break. The two parking spots for the handicapped, complete with signs, are likely to be directly in front of the Post Office and in front of the Port Perry IGA Store. This is "Access Awareness Week" in Canada and Port Perry resident Bonnie Halward told council that people in wheelchairs have a tough time getting access to many commu- nity facilities. Mrs. Halward, who has MS and often can get around only in a wheelchair, pointed out the lack of designated parking in the downtown core for the handicapped. While she agreed there is an overall parking problem in the downtown core, she said it is very difficult for the handi- capped if they can't get a park- ing close to stores or public buildings. And she pointed out that numerous local stores and busi- nesses are not accessible for the handicapped. "There is a real need for more public education about fis problem," she told the coun- cil. Mrs. Halward is a member of an MS group. Recently, she tried to find a hall in Port Perry to hold a luncheon for MS volun- teers from all over Dushsnm, atT ENTION many of whom are in wheel- chairs. Virtually all the public halls in the community are not accessible or poorly accessible, she said. Council members agreed with her, and moved immedi- ately to designate the parking spots for the handicapped on Queen Street. However, there is much more the community can do to make life easier for the handi- capped. A meeting has been orga- nized for this Thursday after- noon to discuss the problems here in Scugog Township. The local Chamber of Com- merce, reps from Handi-transit, councillors and those with handicaps are expected to at- tend the meeting and try to come up with some suggestions and solutions to the accessibili- ty problems. The meeting will be held in the council chambers, which ironically is not readily accessi- ble for wheelchairs, thanks to stairs leading up from the main floor of the Township office. And the washrooms are not large enough for wheelchairs and are lacking the necessary support bars. Mrs. Halward pointed out that the lack of accessibility for wheelchairs is forcing some peo- ple to go out of town to do their shopping.
