Also collecting base hits in Nonquon race fo go on June 3 This locally sponsored race is now in it's 20th year! The pro- ceeds for this race helps support the local museum Scugog Shores. They depend on it as it's their big- gest fund raiser so while you are trying your skills at canoeing you are also helping a cause. The race offers a variety of classes in which you can enter. Applications with all the informa- tion are available at Pineridge Sports, Sportsland, Port Perry Star and Brock's. There are various prizes awarded including most money brought in. One of the most popular classes is the Tourist class. It allows the participant the opportunity for a leisure pladdle over some scenic routes - the river and the lake with the knowledge that if they get in difficulty there is help available from the Port Perry Yacht club which patrols the lake. There are also people with a radio contact at each check-point and bridge on the river. Through this system the committee at the lakefront is able to keep track of each canoe. Prizes in the tourist class are awarded or picked by lot. Come out and have a fun day. The next evening at Dur- ham Fields, the Eagles came up § with a victory over a split squad of the Canadain Junior team. Scorein this one was 4-3. Al Heintzman turned in a fine performance on the mound, pitching the distance to record the win. And he got some help at § ) the plate with timely hitting by Pilkey, Bryant. May 13 at the lakefront park, all the offense in the game was supplied in the fifth inning {3 when Rich Bricknell belted a solo homer and the Eagles nipped arch-rival Greenbank Gamblers by a 1-O score. There was a large crowd on hand for this one as these twori- vals went toe-to-toe, and the Ea- gles got a nifty five innings of pitching from Ken Irvine who recorded the win, on four hits. For the Gamblers, Mark 4 Goreski was also sharp, but had to take the loss on a two-hitter; the home run from Bricknell Dickson and Ken § ; In the home opener played i and a double off the bat of Law- g® rie Williams. If that's the way these two teams are going to perform this season, fastball fans in Port Perry and Greenbank are in for a treat cach time they meet. Over the weekend, the EA- le bats fell silent as the team ost two nail-biters in Richmond Hm, by the identical score of 1- Steve Connors and Jay Wil- liams managed to hit safely against Hy and Zel, while Law- rie Williams threw a four-hitter and was victimized by an error. In the second game against Stouffville, John Annis and Al Heintzman hooked up in a real mound duel with Annis gettin the win 1-0 on four hits an Heitnzman giving up just five hits in a losing cause. Port had a strong rally go- ingin the third inning when the team loaded the bases, but was not able to cash a run or two. Eagle skipper Doug Scott was pleased with the way his team launched the season in the Oshawa City and District A Di- vision. He said the pitching from Irvine, Williams and Heintz- man has been first rate, the de- fense adequate, but the offen- sive punch just isn't there quite yet. But not to worry as it's still early in the season, and the sleeping bats will eventually thaw out to start providing some timely hits in aid of the pitching staff. This week, the Eagles will be looking for some revenge as they host Stouffville Thursday night at the lakefront diamond (game time 8:30) and journey to Richmond Hill Friday for a match with Hy and Zel's. The Eagles lost both games to these teams last week by the same 1-0 scores and the team will be out to reverse that sce- nario in Week Two. onda aia dbl Ll We are not sure what It is, but on the afternoon of May 16, something was dumped Into the small creek that runs through the heart of Port Perry. The water became tepid and milky for well over an hour, and then cleared up. The sub- stance, whatever it was, had no odour or taste.
