The Greenbank Gamblers are hoping that you will puchase a During the past eight years the Greenbank Gamblers have been one of the premier fastball clubs in the Province of Ontario. They have represented Green- bank at Championship Competi- tions and Tournaments across the Province with outstanding results, In both 1987 and 1988 they were invited to participate at the "Bulova Watch' Tournament at the Canadian National Exhibition. In 1986 they won the "All On- tario" Intermediate "C" Cham- pionship and last year they topped off an outstanding season by be- ing crowned the "All Ontario" In- termediate "Open" Champions after defeating Oshawa, Peter- borough, South Porcupine, Grimsby and Acton in the 0.A.S.A. Tournament held in Lon- don, Ontario. The Gamblers pla y "Under The Lights" in Greenbank Park every Monday night and we invite everyone to come to the park and give your support. Traditionally at these Monday night games, "The Hat" has been passed to help defray the costs of Umpires and Balls, etc. This year the team is dropping "The Hat" collection and instead is selling season tickets that will cover admission to all Gamblers games in 1989. A season ticket is only $10.00 and could well be considered as one of the great values of all time here in the Village. 'Some of the teams playing in British touch on the courts Hear Ye! Hear Ye! British Days are coming to town and so is Wimbledon! The Port Perry Tennis Club's Mixed Doubles Tournament, originally schedul- ed for July 1st, has now officially been changed to coincide with the . British Days weekend, thus mak- ing 'Port Perry's Wimbledon' on July 8th with the finals being played on July 9th. Players and spectators can meet Port's own Martina, Carling, Chrissie, Pam, McEnroe, Lendl and Connors! The Port Perry Tennis Club is pleased to announce the appoint- ment of Douglas Coombes as our club pro this year. Doug is a Ten- nis Canada Certified Instructor and has taught tennis to juniors and adults for over ten years. He provincially ranked in 1981 and al982 and won a Silver Medal at the Ontario Summer Games in 1983. Doug was a featured player at the Golden Griddle Celebrity Tennis Event in 1987 and 1988 and is currently employed with the Ontario Tennis Association as Director of Club Services. Lessons start next Tuesday. Club members Jay Neill and Quinn Sutherland will be assisting Doug in the six weeks of lessons. Ladies', mark Wednesday, May 17th on your calendar as the Ladies' League commences again. This league is a fun, non- competitive event and runs throughout the summer with a Singles Tournament winding up the season in September. The ladies enjoy fellowship, exercise, pot-luck lunches and swimming parties so plan on spending Wednesday mornings at the . courts, commencing at 9:30 a.m.. A diligent crew worked at the courts last Saturday putting up windscreens, checking the nets and a general clean-up. The popular Monday Night League commences on May 29th. A sign-up sheet is at the courts, the deadline being May 17th. The club's first tournament of the year is soon approaching, the Fun Tournament and that's ex- actly what it is. Come out, meet old acquaintances, make new friends, enjoy the food and just maybe you'll win a fun prize! On the lighter side of tennis, a zipper is that marvelous fastening device for joining the front panels of our tennis shorts and must be adjusted after every other point. See you on the courts! Driver fined in Prov. court Mr. Michael Ginrich of Pe- terborough, Ontario was plead- ed not-guilty in Provincial Of- fenses Court last week, to charges of failing to pull over to the right and stop for emergen- cy vehicles. Officer Richard Hanlan of the Ontario Provincial Police was the investigating officer. He was called upon by the crown tobear witness. Officer Hanlan reported that on November 165, he was heading north on Regional Road 12 on his way to an acci- dent site. Upon approaching the de- fendants' Truck, he engaged his lights and siren. The truck did not pull to the right as required, and the Officer was unable to pass for approximately 400 metres. . The truck was unloaded, and the Officer was driving right behind him. He could see that the defendant was wear- ing a pair of stereo headphones. Th he Defendant was later rooklin Concrete: pulled over as he passed the ac- cident, along Regional Road 12, and charged. Mr. Ginrich explained that his diesel truck is very loud, and he wears the "walkman" so that he can hear the news. He said that he was com- ing around the corner, and did not see the Police car immedi- ately. When he did notice it, he was along a stretch of soft, nar- row shoulder. He did not want to pull over there, as he thought he might be endangering his vehi- cle and himself. He then came upon a bridge and thought that he might pull over on the packed shoulder on the other side. The Officer passed him before he had the opportunity fost, ustice Harris considered the evidence, and explained that the Highway Traffic Act requires you to brink your vehi- cle to a stand still, and pull right if you are able.
