On Saturday, April 15th, Dan Wells and Mike Haigh represented Port Perry at the Brookdale Park Inn, Pro-Am in Barrie. The two were among some 120 competitors which in- cluded the majority of profes- sional armwrestlers from Ontario and Quebec plus numerous American National champions, (some from as far away as New York, the Dakotas and Utah). Dan Wells (sponsored by Pro- gressive Drywall, Concord Ont.) finished 4th in the 175 1b. category. Mike Haigh (sponsored by Schildt Machining Ltd. Port Perry), edg- ed out teammate Dan in the quarter-finals to capture 3rd place. Mike was eliminated by "Cobra" Rhodes of New York in the semi-finals. Rhodes then squared off in the finals against Mark Gardiner of London with Gardiner coming out on top. Dan and Mike both racked up an im- pressive list of victories throughout the contest over some previously unbeaten opponents. _ Port Perry's Most Sportsmanlike Award was given to Jeff Robataille of Barrie. Saturday April 29, saw John Roberts, Rick Erwin and Mike Haigh enter a local competition in Oshawa. Even though it wasn't a contest they had been training for, their spur-of-the-moment en- try provided some excellent results. John Roberts was undefeated in Open Left category and also pull- ed to a strong 2nd place in the Middleweight group. Rick Erwin came away with the number one spot in this class by not suffering a loss throughout the competition. In the Lightweight bracket Mike Haigh pulled his way to a first place finish, also without los- ing a match. Pat Mastrangelo handled the coaching duties of his teammates for the afternoon. Rick Klock of Port Perry had a successful day also as he won first in both the Bantam and Flyweight divisions. In the Overall match-up, the category winners squared off for a special prize. Rick Klock 'defeated Heavyweight winner Ron Landry who was then beaten Mike Haigh. Then Mike and Rick Erwin battled for the Overall ti- tle which Rick won, claiming the Top Armwrestler prize. Their next stop is the Northern Ontario Open Championships in: Trout Creek on May 13th. Best of luck, guys! Bulls close in The Bradford Bulls have opened a three games to one lead in the all-Ontario Junior C hockey finals with Hanover Barons. The Bulls could wrap up the championship tonight (May 9) when they meet the Barons in Hanover. Bradford is in position to capture the series thanks to wins of 6-6 and 4-3 in the first two games, followed by a .7-3 win Sunday night in Hanover. The Barons lone win to date in the series came last Thursday night when they nipped Bradford 4-3. That was a penalty-filled contest in which Hanover had four players suspended and Bradford one. 'Bradford defeated Lake- field Chiefs of the Central 'League to earn a berth in Junior C championship, while Hano- ver dumped Belle River to ad- vance to the finals. It's play ball! Over 100 eager 9 and 10 year olds from the area have their ball gloves out and are ready to 'Play Ball." Thanks to the hard work of Carolyn Best (President of Port Perry Softball) and the 9 - 10 Mite Convenor, Marien Vander Slagt, all the organization has been done and the season will begin Tuesday at 6:00 at the Legion Diamond. There are nine teams involved at this age level: B & R Electric coached by Nelson Coish, Bruton's coached by Dan Orr, Norton Home Improvements coached by Margaret Rowland, D.J. Taylor coached by Mr. Kroonenberg, Irwin Smith coach- ed by Wayne Mahaffy, Anderson Chev-Olds coached by Al Wakeford; Seagrave - Kent Gilliam, Greenbank Four-Kee coached by Dan Keeble, and Greenbank Perfect Heating coached by Judy MacSween. Now it is the coaches' turn to take over, and you will find them passing on their skills each Tues- day at 6:15 at one of the following diamonds: Port Perry Legion, Port Perry Perry Glen, Seagrave, Greenbank Main Diamond and Greenbank School. The coaches and the team members are all anticipating a great summer of softball, ending with the final play-off game on August 19. At the moment, that seems a long time off: with lots of prided games to take place irst. Ajay Singh (front) of Whitby was the winner of United Nations Pilgrimmage for Youth public speaking competitions held Sunday afternoon In Columbus. Other competitors were from left: Chris Shulen of Oshawa, Heather Drygala of Oshawa and Karen Dupont of Port Perry. For his efforts, Ajay will spend several days this summer at the United Nations in New York. Each of the contestants had to give a five minute speech on the UN. The com- petition was sponsored and hosted by District 41 of the Oddfellows and Rebekah Lodges, which includes Port Perry.
