For many years, this approach has been recognized as the most precise genetic evaluation technique but, until recently, the lack of com- puter capabilities and computing | strategies have prohibited its use. Semi-annually, sire proofs and cow indexes for type are com- | puted by the University of Guelph and released by Holstein Canada to the dairy industry. February 1989 will witness the first run of type proofs under the advanced | system. The production sire proofs and cow indexes, using the | new procedure, will not be runun- | til mid-year. Although the implementation of | the Animal Model is essentially only an enchancement in the | statistical methodology used to | calculate sire proofs and cow in- dexes, there are some modifica- | tions that may influence the ap- pearance and interpretation of | the published evaluations. The § significant change in the new system is the shift to a new base; | cows first classified in the past | five years will replace bulls pro- ven in the past twelve years as the base for calculations. Because of this enhancement from the current bull base to a | cow base, the appearance of some bull proofs and cow indexes may | alter but not their relative rank- ing in the population. Generally, | the range of the genetic evalua- | tions is wider in comparison to the former values and sires previous- ly just above zero are now only average.
