i by Robert Streich Education week was a eat opportunity to enjoy some ive theatre in Scugog. In addition to the many public school productions which were held for the benefit of parents and friends, the two local high schools held their Drama Nights, Monday and Wednesday Pig at Port Perry High School, audiences were delight- ed by four different one-act plays, including the award win- ning performance of "The Zoo Story." On Thurday and Friday nights, Cartwright High School students performed three one- act plays. One of the interesting things to note was that the plays were entirely student productions, including the di- recting. "Three Phone Calls" was a situation comdey which poked fun at modern life. "If girls asked boys for dates" was a blatantly sexist role-reversal play which irre- sistably drew the audience in. "A memo from Jupiter" was a mythological irony in which the old Greek Gods tried to find themselvesin contempo- rary New York. The plays were all well per- formed and attested to the hard weeks of work the students had putintothem. At the conclusion of the Friday night performance, the three adjudicators chose "a memo from Jupiter" as the best play, and complimented direc- tor Gerry Douma on an excel- lent interpretation. Jupiter cast members Shiane Holbik alnd Rob Keast won as best actress and best supporting actor respectively. Bryan Green from, "If girls asked boys for dates," won the award for best actor for his physical portrayal of the bash- ul George. Jenny MacGregor took the award for best supporting ac- tress as Mrs. Hanna in , "three phone calls." The adjudicators com- mented that the awards are merely an extra recognition of hard work . All the actors and actresses involved in amateur theatre should be proud of themselves for getting through the try-outs and having the op- portunity to reap the satisfac- tion that comes from the audi- ences' applause at the end of a show.
