McClelland Caesarea Fire Chief Len Scott will not resign, but he will ask Scugog Township council to grant him a six-month leave of absence from his duties. Chief Scott told the Star Monday night it's up to the council to either accept his re- quest for a six months leave or fire him, but he won't resign as requested over the weekend by Mayor Howard Hall, The Mayor declined Mon- day evening to comment on the situation surrounding Chief Scott, but he acknowledged he asked the Chief to submit his re- isgnation on Saturday following a meeting between himself, Ward 4 councillor Glen Mal- " colm and three officers with the Department. Chief Scott was out of town for the weekend and not present at that meeting. The request for his resignation came at the con- clusion of the meeting. This controversy erupted several weeks ago when a peti- tion was signed by the 19 fire- fighters at the Caesarea Hall suggesting that Chief Scott should retire. The Chief, who has been with the department for 34 years, said Monday he acknowl- edges that some of the "younger guys" have new ideas and atti- tudes about how the depart- mentis run. That petition has never been made public, but it is be- IF YOUR RD WAS HERE OVER 16,000 people could have read it this week! That's a lot of potential customers for your business. He also said he was sur- prised and angry when the re- quest came Saturday for his res- ignation, especially in light of a Township council resolution of April 10. Council at that meeting spent a considerable amount of the situation at the Caesarea Hall. The minutes of that in- camera meeting state only that "it was generally agreed that Mayor Hall would meet with the Fire Department and urge them to continue under the presentset of circumstances un- til such time as the Fire Depart- ment study that has been re- quested from the Fire Marshall's Office is complete." That study of fire protec- tion in all of Scugog was re- quested by the council when the petition was presented by the Caesarea fire-fighters earlier this year. Chief Scott said that if council grants him the six months leave of absence, he ~ would continue to draw his re- tainer as Chief, but would not have anything to do with the Fire Hall or operating the de- partment. At the end of six months, he said he would like to continue working with the department in some capacity other than Chief. And he suggested that the time has come for Scugog Town- ship to have one Fire Chief over both halls in Caesarea and Port Perry. ; "It should have been done a long time agp," he said, adding that it would cost the Township to hire a full time chief. In the meantime, he is hop- ing council will grant him the leave he is seeking. "I've never asked for a leave n 34 years. Now I am," he stat- e "If the request is granted, The Greenbank Hall Committee held a dance early in March and raised $1117 for the Hospital Expansion fund. Rodd Foster accepts the cheque from Marion Watson of the Greenbank Hall Committee. ----S--..y council will have to appoint an officer to handle the Chief's du- ties for the next six months. ) He said he will be submit- ting his request for the leave this week. It is believed the council will deal with the re- quest this week as well. i GALAXY NEEDLECRAFT Super Savings on all our Knitting Machines 8 DIFFERENT MODELS ON DISPLAY THREE BIG NAMES TO CHOOSE FROM JOIN OUR KNITTERS CLUB AND SAVE!
