In response to questions from councillors last week, Bell Canada officials stated that those residents in Durham who live in the present 705 area code (Brock Township and a small part of eastern Scugog) will dial a seven-digit number instead of 911 that will hook them imme- diately into the central Supsteh bureau at Regional Police HQ in downtown Oshawa. Once in place, the 911 sys- tem will replace the more than 30 emergency' numbers now used across Durham when the public must contact police, fire or ambulance in an emergency. One of the main features of the enhanced system is that once a callis placed, the address and phone number of the caller immediately are displayed on a screen beside the operator re- ceiving the call.
