Southern Africa Link Having returned within the week from a church visitations tour in southern African coun- tries, Smith brought the addi- tional perspective of African societies to impact on the theme of the meeting. She related how the women of Zimbabwe had launched the Ecomenical Decade of the Churches in Solidarity with Women in Church and Society on March 4, 1989, at a week-long meeting of 350 people. In Zambia, women of southern Africa had given Smith a large banner in Zambian colours of gold, earth red and green, bearing the logo and lettering of World Day of Prayer, for presentation to the Women's Inter-Church Council of Canada (WICC). Betty Turcott, Bowmanville, President of WICC Canada, and First Vice President of Oshawa Presbyterial UCW, joyously accepted the banner on behalf of the WICC. Focusing on the wholeness of creation in relation to the day's theme, Smith led the Brooklin gathering through an exercise which seemed to conclude that all systems such as political, economical, physical, aesthetic, sociological, etc., depend on each other for the successful operation of each, and for the wholeness of creation, and that is the way we must learn to live.
