One of Ontario's foremost recital organs PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 28, 1969 -- 49 Pipe Organ lovingly restored to splendour "Let me just say that it suits the roomvery well." The room Keith Rasmus- sen is referring to is the interior of the Simcoe Street United Church in Oshawa, and "it" is a massive Casavant pipe organ that has recently be re-stored lovingly at a cost of about $40,000. Mr. Rasmussen is the or- gdnist and choir director at Simcoe Street United and when he spoke of "filling the room + very well," he meant the sound that comes from the four key boards and the 3,000 pipes. The Church itself was con- structed in 1867, and the Casa- vant Bros. organ was installed in 1920.For many yearsit had a reputation as the "foremost re- cital organ between Toronto and Kingston," according to Mr. Rasmussen. And today, thanks to the restoration project over three years, the sounds are even bet- ter. Much of the project in- volved re-voicing the pipe- works and the result is a "much clearer, silvery tone, and a bet- ter blend between the stops." Some of the 3,000 pipes are no larger than a pencil; the larg- est is 16 feet high and 14 inches Senior Citizens Club Sunny days bring out folks The Senior Citizens Meeting was held at the Latcham Centre Wednesday Mar. 23 at 2 p.m. President Bill Harper opened the meeting and "Welcomed" . everyone. The Simcoe Street United Church is proud enough of the organ that a public recital is scheduled for Thursday, April 6,, featuring famed Dutch or- ganist Willem Hendrik Zwart, who will peform a wide-ranging repertoire of hymns and tradi- tional organ music. Zwart is currently on a cross-Canada tour.. And on April 16, the Keith Rasmussen, at the key board of the recently re-furbished organ at Oshawa's Simcoe St. United Church. The public will have a chance to attend a recital on April 6, per- Church will be holding a mass choir with Mr. Rasmussen ac- companying the 70 voices. Simcoe Street United Church, just south of King Street in Oshawa, will seat about 900 in the pews and the multi-tiered balcony that wraps around three sides of the interi- or. Of course, for a recital of or- gan music, the best seat in the house is the one farthest away in the back row of the balcony. The April 6 recital by Hen- drik Zwart is open to the public and gets underway at 7:30 PM. A small admission will be charged at the door. Incidently, the Casavant organ, built in St. Hyacinth, Quebec, would have cost about $20,000 when installed back in "1920. To replace it today, the cost would be halfa million. formed by Dutch organist Willem Zwart. (see story for details) . AUCTION SALES FRIDAY, APRIL 7 SALE TIME: 10:00 A.M.
