LA The Port Perry Juveniles have been eliminated from the all-Ontario semi final hockey series. . The end of the line came - 21 as Hespeler blanked the Juveniles 5-0 to sweep the best of five series in three straight games. . A short-staffed Port Perry team allowed Hespeler to score twice on the power play and once short-handed in the game which was played in the Pres- ton Arena, - The first game in this se- ries was a barn burner at the Scugog Arena which went into over-time as Hespeler nipped - Port Perry 8-6. . Butonhomeiceit was a dif- ferent story for the smooth skat- ing and passing Hespeler squad which won both games rather easily by scores of 9-3 and 5-0. Port Perry coach Dave Bar- | key was naturally disappointed at the outcome of the series, but On Saturday, March 18, five members of Port Perry Arm- wrestling won 8 out of a possible 15 awards at a tournament held at Curley's Filling Station in Oshawa. The contest, sponsored " _. by Labatts attracted about 40 con- .testants from as far away as Lon- don, for an afternoon of top-flight armwrestling. Rick Erwin, competing in Light deavy, Heavyweight and Open Left, defeated Jay Martin. of : ¥0O8hawa 'in. both of 'the right- -- handed categories to earn 1st "place honors and placed 3rd in the "x. left, making it quite a successful day for Rick. ; Pat Mastrangelo (sponsored by Re/Max Apple Realty, Kingsway Limosine, Oshawa) wrestled in the Middle and Light-Heavy weights and earned 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Pat squared off in the : Middleweight finals against Mark Gardiner of the London Armwrestling Club and in the Light-Heavy semi-finals against Jay Martin. " John Roberts amazing left arm took him right the way through to the finals in the Open Left and gained 2nd place honors to Jay Martin who captured first. On March 26 we travelled to 'Lindsay for our final league game against the Lindsay Juniors. The Lindsay team came out playing a very agressive game which cause them alot of penalties in the two periods. The Port perry team capitalized on this and kept their heads and scored a total of 9 goals in the two periods. ; With winning this game 9-4 the Sportsland Juniors will be . presented the League Champion- he had words of praise for the Hespeler team. And he also said the overall season for his team was gratify- ing. ' : He said the formation of the Juvenile team last fall al- lowed many of his players a chance to continue playing hockey, and they had some fun over the season as well, He indicated that he's will- ing to take on the 'coaching chores for the Port Juveniles again next season. As for Hespeler, a team that has not been defeated all season, the next opponent for the all-Ontario championship will bé Niagara-on-the-Lake. There is an interesting foot-note to this Hespeler Juve- nile team. Most of the players have been with the same coach- ing staff since Novice level as the team and the coach move through the age levels together. Arm wrestlers turn on the heat Mike Haigh (sponsored by Schildt Machining Ltd.) earned the 3rd spot in the Middleweight division losing a tough match to Pat in the semi-finals. Terry Barton also scored a 3rd place in the Lightweight bracket with first place going to Rick Klock of Port Perry and 2nd to Mike Smith of the London Arm- wrestling Club. Tournament organizer Jim Platanitis handled the referees duties with the help of Bob Am- brose of Oshawa. The referees _ had the tough task of choosing the Most Sportsmanlike competitor of the day. They dedided it should go to Garth Carlson of the Port Perry team because in a match with Ron Landry, Garth pinned Ron right off the start which Ron pro- tested, he wasn't ready. It was Garth's option to take the victory or opt for a restart, which he did and unfortunately lost. This is Garth's third Sportmanship award in his two-year career.
