PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 28, 1989 -- 27 Petites busy preparing for the Regionals The Bruton's I D A petite team has been very active in the past the * few weeks with the: Fatlices. £2 gin 0sing 2 out of 2 games against Beaverton this season the Bruton's team . excepted a challenge of an exhibition game in Beaverton. Due to a few girls play off games, exhibition games and - being sick or on holidays, we had a depleted staff of 12 players for this game, The girls started a lit- tle slow in the first period but gained momentum the longer the game went on. : . Brandy Harris, our designated red stick to look after Beaverton's hot number 9 did an excellent job along with our white sticks to hold this player to only 2 goals. She had reviously scored 13 goals in our t 2 outings against them. With alot of hustle and desire the Port girls fought back from a 5-3 deficit at the end of the first period to take a 7-6 lead into the final minute of the last period at which point Beaverton put out all (From page 26) goals in just about every game. - They handle the puck like magi- cians. Bill Lawrenson emerged as one of the hardest workers on the squad, both as a forward and when pressed into duty on defense. He scored the goal Fri- day night that got the MoJacks goingon acomeback. teve Connors played his best hockey.in the playoffs. His al Friday in Wellington on a' reakaway was a classic. Jeff Lynch kept the Mo- Jacks in numerous games with his great goaltending. He faced 50 shotain Sunday's game. their power at once and tied the score 7 all to finish the game. Way to go girls, you showed them what Port is made of. Scor- ing for this game were Vicki 3, 1 assist, Heather 1, 3 assists, Jen- ny 1, 1 assist, Leea and Lynda 1 goal each with single assists go- ing to Lisa and'Deanna. The Bruton team then had their last round robin playoff game against Mariposa in which they dominated right from the opening free pass. This game gave some of our defense girls a chance to play for- ward. and they made a good show for their effort. Scoring for this game were Lynda Payne 4, 2 assists, Katherine Ellis 2, 3 assists, Jean Templeman 2, 2 assists, Shona Moase 2, 2 assists, Joan Anderson 1, 2 assists, Heather Lally 2 goals, Jenny 1 goal and assists going to Amanda Webb with 2 and 1 each for Bran- dy Harris, Amanda Clouthier and Melissa Pereman. With this win we finished se- 'MoJacks out of series er and Dean Smethurst always seem to be around the puck and they are three of the best penal- * tykillersin the league. Captain Thane Ellis, felled - over a month ago with a serious knee injury, suited up for the last two games against the Dukes, and saw some limited action. That took some courage be- cause Ellis was risking perma- nent damage to the ligaments. Thelist of outstandingindi- vidualscouldgoon. Suffice to say this team gave it everything. They didn't uit in the face of adversity, and that's about all anyone can ask cond overall in the north division and meant we would have to play the number one team in the south division. While waiting for our next Playoff game the Bruton's team invited Oshawa No. 1 team for an exhibition game to try to sharpen their skills. Unfortunately for the Port Petites, Oshawa wanted this game alot more than we did and dominated the play to take the game 6 to 2. Many Port players are still seeking that invisible hole in the goalies chest or pads and are hav- ing trouble getting the scoring touch needed to win against this type of team. There are corners - in the net girls. After a couple of practices and down to 11 players we headed for Ajax to play their no. 1 team in the league semi-finals. The Port girls quickly found themselves down by 2 goals but they fought back to end the first period down by a score of 4-3. Un- * fortunately the conditioning of the Ajax squad started to show and Port found themselves not only behind the play but also behind on the scoreboard which showed a 10-3 win for Ajax. Scoring for Port were Lynda 2 goals, Amanda Webb 1 goal and a single assist go-' ing to Melissa. This lose put the Bruton I D A Petites out of further play off ac- tion but they have been out prac- ticing and toning their skills to - compete in the "grand finale," the Regionals, being held in Lind- say on Mar. 31, April 1 and 2. The girls have been working very hard to get tprefarel for the tour- nament and it appears that they'll be ready. Look out Lindsay here comes the Port Perry Bruton I D A Petites.
