The workshop was off-limits to young Lea Kitler, who watched enviously as her father and her four brothers sawed, planed, carved, whittled and painted. Woodworking was men's stuff, and although she wanted to get in- volved, Lea was never given the opportunity. Ten years ago she met up with a 72 year old man who made grand- father's clocks and he taught Lea this fine art.-Each clock takes be- tween 80 to 100 hours to make-- at 82, this man has built only 22. As soon as she started, Lea real- ized she couldn't stop. "I've always wanted to tinker around with wood but I never had the opportunity," she said. "I just really enjoy the feeling of good wood." Now 28, Lea has her own work- shop in the basement of her Rosa St. home, as well as access to a friend's workshop. Between the two locations, she has plenty of space and tools to create just about anything from wood. In fact, she has just opened her own business, "Tree Creations", and will make anything from clocks to mug holders. Lea has set up a showroom be- side her basement workshop, where a variety of items are shown off. There's hall trees, tow- ell racks, duck head toilet plun- gers, spice racks, recipe holders, PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 14, 1989 -- 33 mirrors, games, and much more-- "all made from her three favourite types of wood--oak, cherry and walnut. She also retails more elaborate pieces, like solid cedar chests, oak roll top desks, oak baby high chairs, bar stools, maple rockers, hutches, and dining room table and chairs. The big pieces are made by an Ontario supplier, that Lea has been dealing with for two years. "When somebody wanted some- thing I had to order it--that's why I decided to go into the smaller items." Because the showroom is in her basement, it is open mostly by & Sheer beauty of wood appointment. Hopefully there'll be enough interest for people to come and see it," she told the Star. As well as making and selling solid wood pieces, Lea does some home renovations, including painting wallpapering and minor repairs. She did most of the work at her house herself, joctuding dry. walling and stripping the hard- wood floors. Recently she left a full-time of- fice job to concentrate fully on the renovations and Tree Creations. For more information about Tree Creations, call Lea at 985- 0059.
