26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 14, 1989 Port Juveniles face tough test in Hespeler The Port Perry Juveniles opened their best of five all- Ontario semi final series last sat- urday night at the Scugog Arena, and when the smoke had cleared, the visiting Hespeler squad took home an 8-6 overtime victory. As the score might indicate, both teams threw caution to the wind in this wide-open, free- wheeling game that was knotted 4-4 after regulation time. In the straight-ten overtime period, Hespeler struck first at the 33 second mark, then upped it to 6-4 a couple of minutes later be- fore Blair Philips converted a goal Mout pass to narrow things to 6- Hespeler opened another two goal margin with a short-handed marker with five minutes to play. Port Perry had a great chance to get back in the game in the fi- nal three minutes with a power play and Kevin Gibson deflected a Rob Fielding shot from the point. The Port Juveniles swarmed around the Hespeler net with goa- lie Rick King on the bench for an extra attacker. But they were not able to get the equalizer and when Hespeler counted an empty netter in the dy- ing seconds, that put the match on ice. The teams played see-saw hockey through regulation time with Port Perry's Mike Sorley giving his team a 1-0 lead at 3:52 of the first with Willie Edwards and Andrew Steele drawing the as- sists. The teams were four on four when Hespeler tied things at 6:05 and then a minute later Port again took the lead as Edwards slipped in a puck from the side of the net after John Lally had rushed down the left side. Hespeler took advantage of Port Perry penalties in the second period, scoring two on the power play and adding another in the fi- nal minute on a shot that skipped between King's pads.. Port tied the game at 4-4 mid- way through the third when Fielding and Jim Vernon com- bined for two goals in the span of 35 seconds On the first, Vernon fed Field- ing a nifty pass to send him in alone and he beat Hespeler goalie Mike Walters with a shot along the ice. Then it was Fielding's turn to feather a pass to Vernon who broke him home free to score with another shot along the ice. Port Perry got an outstanding goal-tending rformance from ick King who really kept his team in the hunt with numerous tough stops. The Hespeler team has a lot of uick skaters who like to use the rink-wide pass to advantage. And they scored several of their goals on the power play by moving the puck around in the Port Perry zone. The Key-Bar Juveniles were short-staffed for this game as sev- eral of their players took a March break holiday in the sunny south. Port Perry advanced to this round by knocking off Trenton and Hespeler won three straight playoffs against Aurora, Simcoe and Oak Ridges without losing a game. The teams hook up in Game two this coming Sunday in Hes- peler at 2:00 PM and game three is slated for March 21 at 8:00 PM in Hespeler as well. The Port Juveniles will have to win one of these games to ex- tend the series and return to the Scugog Arena for game four scheduled for Saturday, March 25 at 5:30 PM. The Juveniles advanced to the all-Ontario semi final series against Hespeler by knocking out Trenton nine points to three in an eight-point series. Port Perry turned in a con- vincing performance March 7 at home to defeat Trenton 5-1 and wrap up the series. After falling behind Trenton 1-0 in the first period, Port Pe was able to tie things up at 8:4 as Jamie Menzies was set up on a nice play by Keith Roberge and Greg Fitzgerald. Then it was Willie Edwards' turn to go sniping as he clicked for a pair midway through the per- iod. Karl Durham and Andrew peler squad. The visitors took home an 8-6 overtime win to Steele drew the assists on his first and Mark Barkey and Fielding helped set up Edwards' second. With just a couple of minutes left in the middle period, Edwards turned playmaker as he combined with Durham to set Barkey up for the final goal of the game. -- In the third, Port Perry played "kitty-bar-the-door" to shut down the Trenton attack and cement the 5-1 win and the series. Port Perry had 14 minors and one fighting major, while Trenton took 10 minors, one fighting ma- jor and one game misconduct. jase i The Port Perry Key-Bar Juveniles were successful last week In defeating Trenton to advance to the next round of the all-Ontario hockey playoffs.
