1 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 14, 1989 -- 25 After knocking Ajax out four games to one For the MoJacks, next stop is Wellington The Port Perry MoJacks will hook up with the Wellington Dukes in the Central Ontario Jun- ior C semi final playoff. Game one in this best of sev- en affair goes tonight (Tuesday, March 14) in Wellington, and the second game is back in Port P this coming Saturday (March 19) with faceoff set for 8:00 PM. The MoJacks advanced to the semi finals with a convincing five game victory over Ajax Axemen, while the Dukes needed seven games to dispatch a valiant but short-staffed Uxbridge Bruin squad. It's no secret that most Mo- Jack supporters would have pre- ferred to see a Port Perry-Uxbridge series as the built-in rivalry and short travelling time between the ~ towns would have guaranteed a sell-out at every game. And the Bruins nearly pulled off an upset in their series with the Dukes. Uxbridge won game six at home last Friday. evening 8- 6, but the following night in Wellington, the Dukes turned on their famous firepower to hammer the Bruins 10-2 and win the ser- ies. . The MoJacks wrapped up the series four es to one on home ice March 8 with a very convinc- ing 9-6 win. And they did it with an incred- ible eight-goal barrage in the sec- ond period: After a first period pretty much dominated by the Axemen who led 1-0, the MoJacks used the middle frame to build an 8-3 lead, and then put their game in over- drive to cruise away with the 9-6 victory and the series. e Axemen out-shot the Mo- Jacks 17-7 in the first, and were it not for the fine work of netminder Jeff Lynch, the game might have taken a completely different turn. Lynch was brilliant, especial- ly in the first ten minutes as the MoJacks played short-handed for seven straight minutes. On one play in particular, Lynch was flat on his back in the crease and an Ajax player had the open net to shoot at. Somehow, he stuck out the tra and snared the shot. Ajax finally put one past him at 17:11 to take their 1-0 lead on a power play. MoJacks coach Ken Harman must have passed out the "wake- up pills" in the dressing room be- tween the first and second periods as his players came out in a big hurry and were leading 3-1 by the. three minute mark on goals by Troy Foster, John Harman and Dean Smethurst. The Axemen tied the game at 3-3 with two quick ones in the span of 17 seconds, but at 9:20, Jeff Fitchett clicked on the power wh to put the MoJacks ahead for Warren Geer added two in a row to make it 6-3, and in the fi- nal two minutes, Smethurst and Foster tallied to send the MoJacks into the third period with the com- manding 8-3 lead. Smethurst got his third of the game midway through the final to throw cold water on an Ajax mini- rally. Troy Foster led the MoJacks on the score-sheet with five ints. Smethurst and Fitchett had our each, while Harman and Brad. Menzies each had three-point out- ings. 8 The Geer-Harman-Mengzie line continued their dazzling work in the offensive zone, moving the puck around like three magicians. Fitchett, Smethurst and Foster also spun some scoring power magic, while guys like Bill Law- renson, Greg Warriner, Todd Tay- lor and Steve Durham grind the opposition down with their skat- ing and tough checking. Len Gia- calone saw his first action in this series. The MoJacks had a chance to take Ajax out in four straight the previous night (March 7) but the Axemen scored six in the middle frame en route to a 9-6 win, their final goal into an empty net. The MoJacks actually led this one 3-1 after the first, but things fell apart in the middle period. Novice H.L. On Saturday, Port Perry Prin- ting defeated 1.G.A. 5-1 to win their second playoff game. Chris Jamieson led the way for Printing with 2 goals while Aaron Levy, Jonathan Froats and Jonathan Reed each scored once. Aaron Levy and Adam Mahaffy each pitched in with one assist. Cory Morrison replied with I.G.A.'s only marker with Scott Jeffries and Jason Heyworth picked up the assists. The second game of the day saw Re/Max fight back for a 4-2 victory over Van Camp. Jeremy Gibson led the way for Re/Max with a hat trick while Shane Norton scored the other goal. Kevin Cochrane and Alex Dell pitched in with one assist each. Scott Sanderson and Blayne Kinnunen each replied once for Van Camp with Blayne and David Gainey each picking up one assist. All five Novice teams are par- ticipating in the annual House League tournament in town on Monday and are taking a bréak from play off action next Satur- day as the finals of the House League tournaments will be played that day. John Harman and Dean Sme- thurst had two each, with singles to Troy Foster and Jeff Fitchett. This was a chippy series from start to finish with both teams taking a raft of penalties. ere's an interesting stat on the specialty teams. Of the 33 goals the MoJacks scored in the series, 17 came on the power. play, and they had two short- anded markers. Ajax scored 12 of their 24 goals on the power play and had one on a penalty shot. Give the MoJacks full marks for taking Ajax out in five games. The Axemen play a rough- tough, antagnostic brand of hock- ey. NOTEPAD: Based on what went on when Port Perry and Welling- ton met during the regular sched- ule, the up-coming series should be a close one. : In four previous meetings this year, the teams split right down the middle with the MoJacks tak- ing two by scores of 7-5 and 6-5, and the Dukes winning two by margins of 6-3 and 4-3. The Dukes finished the season in second place overall with 51 points on 23 wins, 12 losses and five draws. The MoJacks were four points back in fourth place with a 20-14-6 record in forty games. Led by the league's top scorer Howie Dowdle, the Dukes netted 261 goals on the season while giving up 171. The MoJacks scored 212 and surrendered 196. * Obviously, the MoJacks will have to pay closc attention to Dowdle who had a banner season with 51 goals and 73 assists in 39 games. The winner of this serics will tangle with the winner of the Lakefield-Bowmanville tilt for the league championship. Lakefield won the first game at home Sun- day night by a 6-3 score.
