Learning wasn't easy Auctioneer with accent Auctioneers speak $0 quickly, sometimes it's hard for the layman to understand just what's going on at a sale. ) Their tongues roll smoothly over even the toughest words, their voices rising and falling in a waltz of language that has come to be associated with the back- roads of rural Canada. Auctioneering is an art form that takes a lot of work to master. Professionals study hard to eam diplomas, and according to a 53 year old Blackstock man, there is only one educational facility for auctioneering in the entire coun- try--the Southwestern Ontario Shoo) of Auctioneering in Wood- stock. Manuel Saltariche told the Star the school holds eight day, 14 hour a day courses only three times per year. There's a waiting list to sign up, he ss proudly holding the 9 Joma e was given February th, A full-time employee at General Motors, Manuel has also been buying, selling and re-finishing antiques for many years. He decid- ed to get his auctioneering diplo- ma in order to conduct his own sales. Of course there are many auc- tioneers working in the Scugo, area, but none faced the same ki of challenge at school as Manuel. As his name indicates, Manuel is Spanish. Learning auctioneer- ing might be difficult enough .with a Spanish accent, but Ma- nuel has a unique Spanish-British flavour to his voice. He learned to speak English in England. Needless to say, Manuel had quite the time learning to roll his words around fast enough to pass the course. ot ~~ AMADEUS SY -- 1756 -- SEAFOOD ... "It was a bit embarrassing. I've never spoken in public to people be- fore." From day one in the course, the 30 people enrolled were forced to "speak in public," slowly master- ing the art, They do push you a bit, you know. They're good teachers. They brainwash you, they do," he said. "They computerize our minds to count backwards too." The pupils practised their skills day in and day out in mocked-up auctions, but when vation day arrived, they were forced to do it for real. Graduation was actually a genu- ine estate sale with real people buying real items. Each student drew a number and then took a turn at the auction block. Nobody wanted to be first, and although Manuel managed to avoid that, he was the fifth in line. "And that's nerve-breaking!" he said smiling. But now that school is out and Manuel is an official auctioneer, he's looking forward to workin in Scugog. Some day soon he' like his own auction barn, "If you can find a barn you've got it made," he said. He will be doing some auctio- neering work for free, he empha- sized.
