"ay ) | 30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 7, 1989 Freezing rain lends excitement to game Early Saturday morning, the Novice Home Hardware Ringet- tes travelled to Whitby through the freezing rain for a play-off game. Everyone arrived safely, and the excitement of the trip car- ried through into the match. Port had several early chances to score with Dana Hooker taking a hard shot which the goalie handled with difficulty. A few seconds later, on a free pass in the Whitby end, the goalie had another challenging shot from Cara Vander Slagt on a pass from Dana. The line of Mandy Smart, Cin- dy Verschuuren, and Laura Hooker showed the fans some ex- cellent passing, but all of their at- tempts to score were stopped by Whitby's strong defence. At the 10 minute point of the period, Pam Hiltz delivered what many of the fans thought was the best check of the play-offs. She was able to steal the ring from a much larger Whitby player, sen- ding her stick flying down the ice in the process. Shortly after, Pam tried this trick again and was awarded a penalty, during which the Whitby team scored their first goal. In the remaining 5 minutes of the first period, Port had 2 goals disallowed; one by Cara who was pushed into the goal crease, and one by Laura who scored right on - the buzzer. During the second period, Whit- by came on strong but Port's defensive team made up of Pam, Janna Senyk, Bonni-Jo Norton, and Brooke Shanley were more than able to control them most of the time. In spite of the constant defensive plays around Port's net, Katie Senyk also had to come up with several key saves to keep the score from climbing. At the 10 minute point, Mandy Smart took a hard shot on a free pass in the Whitby end, and the fans had no doubt that the shot had scored. However, the ref didn't see it and the play con- tinued. Mandy took another hard shot immediately, but it bounced back off the goal post. Jennifer Elliott, one of Port's most deter- LAWN-BOY Check-up Time! Soon after, Whitby got a tripp- ing penalty and for the next two minutes all the action was in front of their net. Cara, Mandy, and Cindy shot again and again but the goalie was equal to the task and prevented any goals. With only 35 seconds left in the game, Cara got Port's first goal on a pass from Cindy and Alechia" Cracknell. The final official score was 5-1 for Whitby, but in the fan's hearts it was 5-4. On Saturday afternoon, the Novices again ventured out into the bad weather for a practice on home ice. The coaches were prepared to have an inter-squad game which the girls really en- joyed. As there were no extra bodies, the players skated full out for 45 minutes with lots of friend- ly rivalry. The team thanks Cor- ey Branton for coming out to be the extra goalie. The final score was 2-1 for Port! A team from Woodville came to Port Perry for a Sunday noon game against the Novices. It was soon obvious to all that the Port girls out-classed this little team by a great deal, but it was a good experience for both teams. Brooke Shanley played in goal, first against her own players, and then with them. She is being groomed to be the Novice goalie next year, and she certainly show- ed that she is more than capable as she stopped shot after shot from her own teammates. Each Port player scored at least once, with special mention going to the goals scored by Jen- nifer Elliot and Michelle Branton. The coaches and fans were in- pressed by the attitude of the girls as they made sure the game was worthwhile for Woodville. A few times it seemed that the home team just couldn't skate as well as usual, that their passes went right on to the sticks of the small Wood- ville players, and that their shots on net lacked a little something. The next Play-off game for the Port Perry Novices is in Oshawa next Sunday at 3:00. 45. Canadian Tire Midgets carry runner-up trophy home the During the weekend of February 25, the Canadian Tire Midgets travelled to Beaverton where they battled their way to the final game of the consolation set in the Beaverton tournament. The Midgets faced a tough beginning as they went down to defeat in the first game by a score of 5-1. Port's only goal was scored, unassisted, by Ethan Lavereau and only the fast reflexes and fancy footwork of Noel Lovering kept the score from rising higher. As a reward for his excellent work between the pipes Noel was named Port Perry's M.V.P. for this game. The second game for the Midgets saw them facing off against the home town team, whom they had trouble defeating in the playoffs a few weeks earlier. Eric Grosvenor popped in the additional goal as well as assisting on three of Lavereau's goals. Remaining assists were . awarded to Michael Butt and Aaron Cochrane. The final game was set for 4:45 on Sunday afternoon with Port's competition coming from Markham. Port played a strong game and several excellent shots were stopped by the goalie in green. However, Port's somewhat depleted lineup had some trouble controlling the play and until the dying minutes of the game it ap- peared the scoreboard would re- main set on zero for the Port Perry team but with only minutes remaining Ethan Lavereau took aim and blew the puck by emaie 0st 3rd PRIZE: $25 CASH Markham's goalie, to score Port's only goal, unassisted, bringing the final score to 5-1. The M.V.P. for this game was, again, Noel Lover- ing who, again, had a fantastic game in front of the mesh. For ninety-nine percent of the game he foiled shot after shot on breakaways, backhands, wrist shots and scrambles. With only three minutes remaining Noel went down on an already injured knee and was forced to spend the remaining time watching Markham's second goalie take over his spot defending Port Perry's net. For their efforts the boys car- ried home the runner-up trophy. Rejoining the team for this tour- nament was Paul Kett who is off the injured list. However, Kevin Buscher has rejoined the injured list as he is again sporting a full cast. * FRIDAY NIGHT IS MEXICAN NIGHT * THURSDAY, FRIDAY & SATURDAY NIGHT George 'Miami' Rizsanyi SNOWMOBILERS WELCOME RTS ----r
