After almost twenty years in the public education system, | have taken the plunge and become a working stiff. No more hiding behind excuses of home- work to do and projects to research -- now when my friends invite me out on the town | must look forward to a painful morning after. Life is like that. Well, friends tell me that giving up your ama- teur status carries all sorts of benefits with it; a better lifestyle, respectability, and someone to tell you what to do so you don't have to think for yourself. To me being a professional sounds kinda scary. It means opening a bank account on my own, making important career decisions and asserting my independence by having a pad all to myself. Yes, | cannot lie, the real thrill for me is not the money, prestige or responsibility. What truly turns me on is having a home in which | can do the interior decorating. I don't mean to imply that university resi- dences weren't elegant (they weren't), or that my folks couldn't arrange a room attractively (they could!). | am just looking forward to be- ing able to decide what to put on the walls, where to set up my bookcase and what direc- tion my bed will be facing. There is, of course, a hitch. I had been living in Oakville while | went to school. When | made the big break and came here | had supernovas in my, eyes. | thought that | could commute for a while and Qracualy find the perfect place for, say, mid-March. Problem is actually finding it. When | was at college, they had this wonder- ful thing called a housing office. People with accomodations called in and students seek- ing accomodation called back. Believe it or not, there isn't a housing office in Port Perry. So what was | to do? There were three op- - tions available to me; use a housing service, check the classifieds in the paper, or start knocking on doors. Of course, being a veteran of many house seeking campaigns, | took the simplest route and opened to the classifieds. What | found there was reminiscent of every bad horror flick I have ever seen - there were few apartments available at all, and those which were listed had frightening price tags attached to them. Even in the big smog, | could get a nice two bedroom apartment for less than $700 plus utilities. | admit it, | was depressed. | thought that | would end up in some damp little hole for the rent that | was willing to pay. But people around the Star suggested pos- sible options; calling around on my behalf and inquiring in likely spots. Finally, the impossi- ble occurred, | went to see a reasonable one bedroom apartment - it was love at first sight! The downside is that | have to wait until the end of the month to move in, but it is worth it. it will be a pain commuting everyday from Oak- ville to the Port, but | will be looking forward to having one place to put all of the keepsakes | have collected over the years. | must admit, coming to Port Perry for the first time, | was a little apprehensive. | wasn't nervous about it being a small town -- | grew up with only two neighbours to speak of, a half-kilometre down the road -- | was more wor- ried about it being a large city. In that regard | wasn't disappointed, espe- cially when | was given a tour of the country- side. In truth, | was so enchanted with Black- stock that | will be moving there in April. I must admit that it has been the people who really impress me. Not just the staff at the Port Perry Star - although they truly are a friendly lot, and have tried hard to make me comforta- ble - it's the people across the Township that have really warmed me with their easy going ways and caring gestures. | know that | wouldn't find this in Toronto. _It has only been a few short days, but al- ready | feel that | will be proud to call Scugog Township home. yan Public speaking 'Willy' the rabbit helps win first prize Epsom and Area News by Jean Jeffery On Feb. 26 Christy Mahlberg competed at Port Perry Public Speaking Contest and received first prize in her class.
