16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 28, 1989 Paul Van Camp graduates with top 5% marks in Canada At 26, Paul Van Camp isn't do- ing too badly for himself. He married his high school sweetheart, Yvonne, and the couple is expecting their first child in May; he opened his own accounting business last May; and not too long ago he completed the final stage of a gruelling five year education in accounting--the char- tered accountant's standard Canada- wide exam. Four thousand people across the country wrote the exam last year, and Port Perry's Paul Van Camp finished with marks in the top five per cent. No, he's not doing too badly at all. Since he was 16 years old, Paul knew he wanted to be a chartered accountant, and he started his for- mal education at the University of Waterloo in 1983. After complet- ing the co-op program, he ob- tained 45 credits in accounting courses, went through the School of Accountancy, and then finally, last Fall, he passed the final Cana- dian exam with astounding marks. Over the years he has gained plenty of experience in the field, mostly through a large firm in Toronto called M. Finkelstein and Partners. Most accountants in their first few years expect to be working at large firms, and are happy doing so--very few have their own busi- of it as boring because some of nesses so early in their careers. But Paul does--and he credits ac- countant Dave Muir, who recently closed his own accounting busi- ness and turned over many of his accounts to Paul. "I owe an awful lot to Dave for the opportunity," he said. Paul's really happy to be work- ing in his hometown (his office is on Water St.) instead of a big To- ronto office. "I'm not a big corporate man," he explained. "Plus, Port Perry is really growing and that helps." His favourite part of the busi- ness is helping businesses and in- dividuals, "really helping people," he said. He says he'd like to concentrate on giving up-close personal atten- tion to small and medium sized businesses, helping entrepreneurs realize their dreams. "I like to think of myself as an advisor, a consultant," he added. _ While many people harbour the impression that accountants are "boring", Paul says that's not so. "I can see how people can think the work can be tedious," he said. "I want to throw that perception aside. I think I'm a colourful per- son!" His wife Yvonne runs the ad- ministration side of the business. rn oe " Mahlberg - 86 percent - 1st place.
