¥ 2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 14, 1989 Equipment moves in four months Lakeside development ab The above photo is an architects concept drawing of what "the Lakeside", being developed on the Conway Gardens property will look like when complet- ed. At lower left is the 100 unit retirement apartment, which will be constructed as phase two of the development. Above the apartments and along the waters edge are two - 45 unit condominium buildings, and in the centre is the 70,000 sq. ft. indoor shopping facllity to be known as Tower Market. The architects and bullder, Hans Moehring have gone to great expense to make sure the entire project Is one that will blend with the community. See story for details. Four years and three architects after unveiling preliminary plans for the Conway property, develop- er Hans Moehring says they are just about ready to get started. Mr. Moehring and his architect, William Woodworth were in front of council Monday morning to bring them up-to-date on the progress of the 7A and Water Street development, which will be known as "The Lakeside." Unveiling an artists aerial con- cept of the development, architect Bill Woodworth explained to coun- cil that there would be four build- ings on the site when completed. It is expected that heavy equip- ment will be moved onto the prop- erty in the near future with excava- tion of both the condominiums, underground parking and the com- mercial plaza (to be known as Tower Market), starting in about four months. Mr. Woodworth said the two condominium buildings, which are styled like large English country houses, will house 45 units in each building. There will be 30 one, two and three bedroom homes available, all of superior quality. Speaking about Tower Market, Mr. Woodworth explained there would be 70,000 square feet of re- tail space, enclosed under a 400' long roof, but the design of the building would be more like the St. Lawrence Market in Toronto, than typical modern plazas. Architecturally, Tower Market will have a stepped-up roof with clear windows along the entire length to RX natural light into the large open space on the inside. On the main level, there will be space for a large 18,000 sq. ft. food market, of which three national food chains have shown interest. Three large drug stores have also indicated an interest in obtaining space in Tower Market. In addition to the larger stores, there is room for about 15 smaller retail stores of approximately 1,800 sq. ft. each. Answering a question by one member of council about concern for the other retail stores already operating in Port Perry, Mr. Moehring explained that most of the enquiries he has had to date are from new companies. He advised council that he has had enquiries from a bank, gourmet store, coffcc and muffin shop, restaurant, and various service type businesses. "We don't want to hurt the downtown, and that is a real con- cern for us", Mr. Mochring said. The main entrance to both the out ready to go Market and the Condos will be by an access road off Water Street which will be known as "Otter Lane", with another entrance 0 posit Port Perry Plaza on 7A high- way. Both the Market and the Condos will be highlighted by large tow- ers. The Market will have a tower at the east end of the building with four clock faces which will be vis- ible from all directions, and the condominium tower will be situat- ed between the two buildings near the water's edge like a lookout or beacon While the 100 unit retirement building is still on the drawing board, it will be built in the second phase of the project, and specific details will have to be worked out with council. Because of the high cost of put- ting parking under the condos, the new proposal shows underground parking has been moved to just in front of the buildings, with under- ground access to each of the con- dos. Also underground with the 100 spaces for parking, is the en- trance to a heated swimming pool, and a locker room area where each of the tenants will have a space for storage. Each of the 90 condominium units will have a spectacular view out onto Lake Scugog, and access to the units will be by one of four staircases or two elevators in each condo. The exterior of the building will be a blend of limestone on the lower level, mixed with red brick and stucco and batten on the top. When the Star asked Mr. Moch- ring if prices for the condo units had been set, he said it was too ear- ly to tell, but suggested they will be luxury units and the prices would reflect that luxury. Following the presentation, council members asked a few ques- tions, but the overall impression was one of favour for the project. Mayor Howard Hall told Mr. Moechring that "we are happy with your proposal and will do what we can to help you." One runaway teen from an Oshawa group home was also caught and returned to the home. 82 Heath Crescent, Port Perry, Ontario PHONE: 985-9451 of Canada/Mutual lnvestco Inc.. two of The Mutual Group.
