LE ---- ee Big Brothers in trouble (From page 9) On paper, board members are only required to devote an hour a half of their time to the agency each month, but Mrs. Du- chemin said the workload is more like three to four hours a week. She says the board needs people with a lot of time to give, a lot of enthusiasm, and plenty of com- mittment. People with good busi- ness sense and access to a word processor would be especially wel- come. "That would really help us out," she said. "We need Jeople with appropriate skills and experience who are willing to commit that time to develop our policies and procedures to ensure that we are providing the best possible service to the Little Brothers and Little Sisters who benefit by friendship with a mature role model." At least one of the new directors must be willing to jump into the vice-president or the president's position. As of February 21, Mrs. Duchemin's tenure as president will be over. The vice-president resigned a while ago. And even if willing directors are found, she admits there's re- organizing and shuffling that has to be done if the agency is to pass Jha scruiny of both audits in the a . If the agency isn't up to scratch, it could be forced to close down anyways. North Durham's group, she says, is "one of the smallest around." Usually the agency has an aver- age of 12 matches on its books between big brothers and little brothers; and big sisters and little sisters. "Now we're down to six," Mrs. Duchemin said. An equal number of women have been waiting two to three years to find Little Sisters. In Oshawa, "where things are operated like a business" an oppo- site situation is going on. The Oshawa agency, Mrs. Duchemin said, has a waiting list of 30 young girls who are looking for Big Sisters. unding might also be a prob- lem if the North Durham agency continues. Usually, a Bowl for Millions is held in February to raise nearly half the organization's budget. Last year's Bowl For Millions "was the worst year yet", with fower dollars raised than ever be- ore. That's why our 12-piece luggage, the Econobox, is now only $9.99, with 12 pieces of delicious Kentucky Fried Chicken. Just take a trip down to see us soon, and you'll find your luggage packed and ready for take-out from January 30 until February 26. This year, there just won't be a Bowl For Millions. Period. "I couldn't ask people to support Bowl For Millions if we don't even know if we're going to be around," she said. "That would be dishonest." There is enough money in the agency's coffers to last another year, she said, but right now, money isn't the biggest problem. "It's people, and it's time," she stated. The agency is in dire need of both. "If the North Durham agency does not carry. on, service to boys and girls may be provided by Big Sisters of Newcastle, Oshawa, Whitby, and Big Brothers of Oshawa," she said. "These groups are funded by the United Way and are staffed by caseworkers, clerical staff and executive directors who report to boards." Although she would be disap- pointed to see North Durham fold, she wouldn't be devastated. "Perhaps the day of providing Big Brothers for boys needing adult male role models or Big Sis- ters for girls in need of mature fe- male friendship locally are gone," she said. "Maybe our children will be better served by the highly or- ganized programs available in hawa. "Besides, if we fold up, I'm go- ing to go south and be a Big Sis- ter. Which is what I wanted to do in the first place." Mrs. Duchemin wants to hear from anyone wanting to be a di- rector for the agency.
