12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 24, 1989 Ever-flowing spring may flow elsewhere (From page 1) water from the spring which bub- bles up out of the ground in the rolling hills on the west side of Durham Road 23. The water then rection and goes under the high- way via a pipe in a box culvert. It _ is on the east side (Scugog Town- ship) where people draw the water id 's ps An un-identified Stouffville woman and her elderly mother prepare to fll an arm-load of jugs with water from the Chalk Lake spring. Moving the pipe would be a great idea, they sald. flows roughly in south-easterly di- . for drinking. } The water is tested for bacteria content every week by the Re- gional Health U~it and there has never been a problem. It is also tested periodically by the Ministry of the Environment for chemical content. Last Thursday afternoon, a re- porter from this paper spent over an hour at the spring talking to people who had stopped to draw water. pipe and creating a parking area off the highway is a good idea. ~ In just over an hour on that afternoon, 23 people stopped to get water. On the weekends there are line ups. Many of the people arrive with large and small con- tainers to stock up on their drink- ing water for a week or so. And they come from all over say, Hamilton. The speed limit along the highway is 80 km/hr, and the traf- fic is heavy. During the summer months, the highway is widely used by large gravel trucks. There is no place to turn around and often a driver who has stopped to draw water will sim- play pull out and make a U-turn in the middle of the highway. Cars and trucks are parked along both sides of the highway, and people trying to walk across the highway have difficulty seeing approaching traffic. Several people at the spring last Thursday said they had wit- nessed near-misses. And while they agreed it would be a good idea to put in a parking area, they also said it would be a shame if the spring had to be capped because of the safety problems. That's a possibil- ity if Durham Region is not able to proceed with the project to move the pipe and build the park- ing area. The $100,000 project will likely get the full support of the All agreed that extending the Durham Region, Toronto, Lind-- regional reps on council from Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock Townships. And since many of the people who are now stopping to get wa- ter live in the Oshawa-Whitby- Ajax-Pickering corridor, Herrema hopes he can line up the support from the Regional politicians who represent those areas as well. In the meantime, people will no doubt continue to stop at the spring, haul their water jugs from the trunk and fill them with what many say is the best tasting water anywhere, Ironically, as the Star reporter -was at the spring last week, a man backed his car onto the top of the box culvert. The car slid on a patch of ice and the back wheels went over the edge of the culvert. As the car hung over the culvert, people continued to fill their jugs right beneath it. A pair of tow trucks were re- uired to lift and pull the car off the culvert. 2d = TI ui rr CONN oe, -, -~, , - NESS TN TN XN oe et ae . He says there is a safety problem with so many cars stopping on the shoulder of the busy high- way as people collect water. (see story for detalis) RONALD D. BRIDGEWATER, Ba. Lis.
