-------- seman em Wendy needs more used plastic bags for her lodge Wendy Bateman, a longtime for- mer resident of Port Perry, is making news again! Native Indians believe the im- purities of the soul can be released by spending some time in a Sweat Lodge, an igloo-shaped tent where they sit, the the heat from the small fire making them perspire. As the excess moisture leaves their body, they think of all the bad things they'd like it to take along. In Haliburton, home of Wendy Bateman, a Sweat Lodge is soon to be erected, but instead of being used for a cleansing of the spirit, its makers want it to represent a cleansing of the earth--or at least a is #s *y K 2 PAR Vd x + Nn % aS LA * ¢ % - » x he. ih : i 52 1% tg x " , id LA $ * cleansing of the 3,888 plastic bags which the earth will gladly donate from its dumps to make it. This Sweat Lodge is going to be woven out of consumerism's van- guard, the plastic bag. "This is Mother Earth and we're piling a blanket of plastic bags on it every day," master weaver Wendy Bateman told a reporter from the Haliburton County Echo. She explained the symbol- ism between her Sweat Lodge and . the Indians' method of covering a willow branch frame with buffalo robes. But unlike the native version, this one won't need a fire to make the people inside hot--because plastic doesn't "breathe" or allow air to pass through it, the heat from the people will make it feel quite toasty in just a short while. However, people have the op- tion of leaving when they feel suf- focated by the plastic's trap. The earth doesn't. "We want it as a tangible focus on recycling and a symbol of what can be done," she told reporter Martha Perkins. To make a plastic Sweat Lodge, Jou first gather up 3,888 plastic ags, which isn't as formidable as it sounds. Plastic bags are given to people everywhere--at the gro- cery store, at the clothing store, at practically every store. And some people don't like throwing them out because they know it will take 100 years for them to decompose. So they save them and rejoice when somebody puts out a call for used plastic bags. I knew they were out there," Wendy said. She will sort the bags by colour (with the help of her husband, Sid Brinkman, and friend Ed Muenzel) and cut the bags into strips. The strips will be linked together, and made into grapefruit-sized balls. That done, Wendy will unwind it into a long shuttle, and eventually thread her loom with brown cot- ton and the plastic. The result will be "plastic cloth" that will form the Sweat Lodge. The finished produce will be displayed in Hali- burton. Meanwhile, more plastic bags are needed! Anyone wishing to help out the project, and get rid of some plastic bags, can drop them off at Art Brunton's Geraniums on Queen St., or at Helen O'Reilly's house at 210 Lilla St. For more infor- ation, give Helen a call at 985- 1 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 13, 1988 -- 37 JD FISHING and ARCHERY Corner of 7A and Water St., Across from Crandells 30 WATER STREET PORT PERRY 286-0737 Open 7 Days a Week for All Your Fishing Needs!
